Animal Tracks on the Beach Boardwalks
Each of the two beach boardwalks in Gawrych Ruda features an educational trail, “Tropy zwierząt” (Animal Tracks), with animal tracks set into the planks. One shows tracks of the grey heron, swan and mallard; the other features tracks of the wolf, beaver and otter from Wigierski National Park. The different motifs invite you to compare the animal groups depicted. The tracks are a permanent feature of the boardwalks, completed in 2022. Here, a specific detail takes centre stage: the animals are not only named, but made visible through their tracks along the boardwalk.
Nature Trails with Different Focuses
The “Jeziora” nature trail lies in the area of Słupiańska Bay, near Gawrych Ruda. Along it, you can learn about forest and bog habitats, discover more about the history of Lake Wigry and learn about differences between lake types. Cormorants and other birds can also be observed. Other topics include lichens and local plant and animal species, alongside sculptures from an international art symposium. While the boardwalks focus on individual animal tracks, “Jeziora” offers a broader view of habitats, the lake and art. Depending on your interests, you can choose between a specific animal motif and several nature and culture topics.
Cycling Routes with Different Highlights
The “Wokół Wigier” cycle route was converted into a bicycle path in 2020. In Gawrych Ruda, it climbs the hill to the church, where it branches off towards Bryzgiel. The climb to the church and the turn-off give this section of the route a clear direction. Nearby, another cycling route, “Do Gawrych Rudy przez dolinę Czarnej Hańczy,” runs behind a small beach and a landing stage, then turns left downhill onto an unpaved track. It passes close to the lakeshore between holiday resorts and summer houses, offering views of Lake Wigry and the opposite shore. The routes described have different highlights: one features a climb and a turn-off, the other a lakeside path with lake views. Check current conditions before setting out on the second cycling route.
History Across Two Periods
The local history can be traced to two points in time far apart. In 1668, the Ruda na Hrudzie (Gawrych Ruda) ironworks belonged to the Suchocki family of ironmasters, who came from Mazovia. Another historical landmark is the obelisk by the Church of St Maximilian Maria Kolbe in Gawrych Ruda: it was unveiled on 16 October 2005 in honour of Pope John Paul II, on the 27th anniversary of his pontificate. Here, the early history of the ironworks meets a later public commemoration, though the two tell different kinds of local history.
