The green hiking trail through the Góry Sudawskie is 34.5 km long. It starts at the market square in Wiżajny and ends at the border crossing in Budzisko. The red-marked circular trail around Lake Wiżajny is 12.8 km long and passes through Wiżajny, Burniszki, Stankuny and Wiłkupie before returning to Wiżajny. The yellow-marked circular trail into the Góry Sudawskie is 16.5 km long; it also returns to Wiżajny, passing through Wiżajny, Sudawskie, Maszutkinie, Makowszczyzna, Kamionka and Marianka.
The two circular trails already differ in length: the red route is shorter than the yellow one, and both return to Wiżajny. Before setting out on these three marked routes, check the current trail markings. The green hiking trail differs in that it runs from the market square to the border crossing in Budzisko.
The yellow circular trail is also characterised by its terrain: it passes through numerous hills over 250 m high, often intersected by ravines and sunken lanes. Anyone particularly interested in such landscape features can compare this route with the red circuit around Lake Wiżajny. The yellow route is specifically described in terms of its hills and terrain depressions, while the red circuit is identified by its course around the lake and the named stops along the way.
Another route is called “Szlak 3”: from Wiżajny, it passes through Sudawskie, Skombobole, Maszutkinie, Wingrany and Postawelek on the way to Budzisko. Sudawskie and Maszutkinie are also included in the yellow circular trail’s stated route. Both the green hiking trail and Szlak 3 lead to Budzisko; the green trail’s destination is specifically at the border crossing. You can also distinguish the routes by their named stops and destinations.
Church architecture and public spaces
The neoclassical Church of Saint Teresa of Ávila in Wiżajny dates from 1825. Its main altar, from the 18th century, is Baroque in style. Plant motifs, angels, curved cornices, volutes, gilding and richly carved small column capitals give the altar its elaborate decoration. Volutes are curled ornamental forms; a capital is the uppermost part of a column. The same building thus brings together neoclassical architecture and Baroque altar design. The different dates and individual ornaments make the church a specific point of interest for travellers interested in architectural and art history.
