In Røyrvik, the mountain landscape of Børgefjell National Park, the inland lake Limingen and insights into local history come together. The village centre is a gateway to Børgefjell/Byrkije National Park; at the same time, part of the national park lies within Røyrvik municipality. Depending on whether you want to focus on nature, culture or activities on the water, you can shape your break in different ways.

Mountain scenery and views

The national park encompasses high mountains, valleys, plateaus, rushing waterways and mountain lakes. You can catch your own fish in the mountain lakes. This landscape gives the region its distinctive natural character and especially appeals to travellers who want to spend time in the mountains and by the water. For an overview of the surrounding area, visit the Børgefjell Viewpoint: from there, the 360-degree view takes in the mountain areas of Børgefjell/Byrkije National Park and the inland lake Limingen. A short path leads to the viewpoint either from the centre of Røyrvik or from Børgefjellsenteret.

If you are looking for a hike with a clear destination, you could consider Dærga. The distinctive peak is 1,108 metres high; from the parking area to the summit, the route is 4 kilometres long, with an elevation gain of about 600 metres. The hike up Dærga is considered suitable for the whole family. The distance and elevation gain are specific details you can take into account when deciding whether to go on this excursion.

Water, play and activities

At Småtjønninn, a floating water park offers 30 different elements for climbing, balancing and playing. This makes for a different kind of holiday day than a mountain hike. At Sarinatangen, there is a beach and a designated barbecue area; the beach is 1.6 kilometres from the centre of Røyrvik. If you would rather fish, trout weighing 3 kilograms or more are not unusual in Namsvatnet.

Skiing is also one of the activities available locally. Børgefjellsenteret is the hub for this in Røyrvik, with two lifts, six runs, a barbecue hut and a warming hut. The municipality also has many kilometres of well-marked snowmobile trails. These options are quite different: you can focus your trip more on the mountains, on activities on the water or on the leisure activities that suit you best.

History and Sámi culture

Røyrvik Bygdatun presents the municipality’s history through traditional buildings and household items. A notable building there is Stallvikstua: the house dates from 1817 and was the first home in Stallvikgrenda. A path about 1.5 kilometres long leads from Bygdatun to Serinatangen. A Sámi shelter and a stilt storehouse have been built there; older Sámi gamme foundations and trapping pits have also been preserved.

Another insight into local history is Villaen i Gjersvika. The house was built in 1913 for an engineer and a foreman, in connection with mining in Gjersvika. Røyrvik Church adds to this cultural experience: built in 1901, the wooden church has a long-church floor plan and 180 seats. At Fjellrevsenteret, an exhibition presents the status of the Arctic fox in Scandinavia.

Getting oriented and choosing when to visit

Startpunkt Børgefjell is a centrally located local information centre. There you can get information about the national park, South Sámi culture, history and economy, as well as services, hiking areas, attractions, accommodation and activities on the edge of the national park and by the inland lake Limingen. If you are travelling by train, you can use Namsskogan station and order a connecting service to Røyrvik. You must book it at least six hours before travelling.

If you would like to plan your trip around a local festival, Bærflækkdagan is one option: the village festival in Røyrvik is held each year around the turn of June and July. When choosing your holiday home, it may help to first decide what you want to focus on: the national park and mountain hikes, water and fishing, cultural history or seasonal activities. This can help you find a suitable base for the kind of stay you want to enjoy in Røyrvik.
