Discover Høylandet

River landscapes, protected wetlands and varied activities give Høylandet a character all its own. You can combine nature watching with hiking and cycling, discover a waterfall and include cultural experiences in your plans. The municipality is particularly interesting if you want to weigh up different priorities for your trip: getting active in the landscape, exploring wildlife and plant life, or discovering local culture.

The municipality includes a valley area along the Søråa, which flows south into the Namsen, as well as along the Kongsmoelva. This river flows north from the watershed into the Indre Foldafjorden. The two rivers provide a useful geographical reference for Høylandet, but this does not imply a shared route or a specific connection between the individual excursion destinations.

Waterfall and wetlands

Grongstadfossen is located near the centre of Høylandet. The waterfall has a 75-metre drop and is signposted from Fylkesveg 17. You can drive to a viewpoint by the waterfall. This makes it possible to include a visit to the waterfall in your plans even if you are not looking to go on a hike alone.

The nature reserves reveal different aspects of the nature around Høylandet. Flakkan protects a significant wetland with vegetation, birdlife and other wildlife. The Øie nature reserve has rest areas, toilets and a birdwatching tower, where you can observe the wetlands and wildlife. If you are particularly interested in plants, the nutrient-rich fen at Hattmoenget offers a different focus: calcareous springs there create habitats for orchids and rare sedge species. Grytbogen-Kubåsen, meanwhile, has one of the county’s largest elm stands and numerous rare plant species.

Trails and active days

There are five marked cycling routes on Høylandet for excursions on foot or by bike. They include Bremburunden, Lille Flakkenrunden and Øievatnet Rundt. Bremburunden is a 4.5-kilometre circular route that you can complete on foot, by bike or with a pushchair. This specific route length helps with day planning without specifying a walking or cycling time.

If you are looking for a longer hike, you can plan a trip to Indre Høgaksla. The route is about 10 kilometres long and leads to a summit 691 metres high. From there, the view extends over Høylandet, Øyvatnet, Ålmesgrønningen and Storgrønningen to the southeast, as well as Hakavatnet and the ocean to the west. In addition, IL-Hållingen and Høylandet municipality have jointly marked nine mountain hikes. This offers a range of options for hiking plans with different priorities.

There are also specific options for other forms of activity: Høylandet has an 18-hole disc golf course in scenic surroundings. The Hållinghallen climbing centre has four auto-belay lines, seven top-rope or lead-climbing lines and a large bouldering area; the hall can be rented. The options are quite distinct: outdoors, the focus is on cycling and hiking routes as well as disc golf, while indoors it is on climbing and bouldering.

Culture and local discoveries

Høylandet Church is a wooden church built in 1860, with a long-plan layout and 250 seats. Another special feature of the area is Norsk Revyfestival: the festival hosts the Norwegian revue championships on Høylandet every two years. Both offer a cultural accent for your trip, alongside the municipality’s nature and activity options.

Local experiences also include offerings from Mevassvik Gård: bee safaris include a visit to an apiary and a honey tasting. Tyldum Gårdsbakeri is a small farm bakery in the centre of Høylandet. If you are considering a centrally located holiday apartment, the proximity of Grongstadfossen to the centre and the bakery there may factor into your decision. Be sure to plan separate visits to the various nature reserves and trails, based on their individual locations.
