Snåsa: Nature, Culture and Trails by Snåsavatnet
Accommodation in Snåsa
Snåsa offers various ways to experience nature and culture: The town is a gateway to Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park, and the municipality is home to Snåsavatnet and several nature and cultural trails. There are also cycling routes through the rural surroundings and places where you can discover history and South Sámi culture. When planning your stay, you can therefore choose to focus on different combinations of excursions, landscapes and cultural discoveries.
Lake, limestone landscape and nature trails
Snåsavatnet lies in the municipalities of Snåsa and Steinkjer and is four miles long. Finsåsmarka lies on a hill south of the lake; the area covers 2,400 decares. Its limestone bedrock supports a variety of forest and limestone habitats. Plant species that are very rare in Trøndelag grow there.
Bergsåsen is another defining feature of Snåsa: This distinctive limestone ridge lies in the centre. In the Bergsåsen nature reserve, which begins near the centre, a dedicated nature trail has information boards about the area's flora. Finsåsmarka, meanwhile, has nature and cultural trails that pass several cultural heritage sites and cross different types of natural terrain. Trail 1 is a 3.2 km loop; Trail 2 is 1.8 km each way.
Snåsa is also the gateway to Blåfjella-Skjækerfjella National Park. Much of the park consists of low mountains and gently rolling terrain. Many marked trails are suitable for family outings. If you're planning an outing with children, you can consider these trails as an option alongside the nature and cultural trails in Finsåsmarka; for the latter, the distances given can help you take the route type and length into account when planning.
Cycling routes and trails through the surrounding area
Snåsa has seven marked and four unmarked cycling routes. The routes let you ride to a fishing lake or mountain pasture, or take a circular tour through the rural surroundings. One route is called Snåsa sentrum–Kolven–Reinsjøen–Imsdalen–Breide–Snåsa and is about 45 km long. This approximate distance is a useful reference if you want to include the route in your day’s plans.
There are also walking routes with different themes: Finsåsmarka focuses on natural habitats and cultural heritage sites, while the nature trail at Bergsåsen has information boards about the local flora. A gravel path leads from Vinje School to the 17 May Stone, with information boards along the way. The stone is on Lysthusberget by the school and is considered Norway's oldest of its kind.
South Sámi culture and history in Snåsa
Saemien Sijte is a South Sámi museum and cultural centre in Snåsa. In Viosen, near the centre of Snåsa, the Bygdemuseet–Vonheim displays objects from Snåsa's culture and history. Viosen is at the end of Snåsavatnet and is considered Snåsa's “old town”.
Snåsa Church also tells the story of the area's long history. Its oldest section, which now forms the chancel and sacristy, was built in the first half of the 13th century. The church is a cruciform church with room for about 550 people. The buildings at Sandmoen, also known as Brorplassen, are considered representative of what was customary on a cotter's farm in Snåsa and the surrounding villages.
If you're interested in local history, you can combine a walk from Vinje School to the 17 May Stone with a look at the information boards. Saemien Sijte is a dedicated point of interest for South Sámi culture, while the historical objects at the Bygdemuseet–Vonheim offer a local perspective.
The lake and seasonal experiences
Snåsavatnet is considered an excellent fishing lake. Fish species found there include trout, Arctic char, eel, three-spined stickleback and burbot. There are 17 active mountain farms in Snåsa: the first open to the public in early June, and the last close only at the end of August. This period offers a seasonal guide for anyone who would like to include a visit to a mountain farm in their stay.
