Art, Workshops and Rural History
Kunstmuseet NordTrøndelag is located in the Kulturhuset in Namsos and presents contemporary Norwegian art through a varied exhibition programme. An open workshop with activities for adults and children complements the offering.
A different way to explore cultural history awaits at Dun on Jøa: Fosnes Bygdemuseum is a small open-air museum about rural history. Its modest size and subject set it apart from the art museum in Namsos. If you are interested in rural life in the past, a visit to this museum offers a fitting thematic counterpoint to contemporary Norwegian art.
At Lund, the Land-art museum Hestøya is being developed as a new outdoor art attraction. Artworks by eight international artists have been installed there. The site adds outdoor art to the options available; unlike at Kunstmuseet NordTrøndelag, the focus here is on the installed works and their connection with the outdoor setting. The museum is described as open to everyone.
Getting Around on Foot and by Bike
Stolpejakten in Namsos is a free, accessible orienteering and exercise concept. It takes place during the summer season, starting on 1 June. This makes it a seasonal way to combine exercise and navigation. For planning your trip, the timing is particularly important: if you would like to include this activity, take its start date during the summer season into account.
Bjørmunslumpen, usually called Klompen, is Namsos’s town mountain. Several trails lead from the town centre to the summit and usually take 20 to 30 minutes. Klompen Pavilion also offers a viewpoint overlooking the town of Namsos. This gives you two specific points to consider when planning a stay that includes a walk uphill and a view over the town.
On Jøa, Jøatrappa and Eventyrstien form a combined hike that climbs up on both sides of Dunafjellet. This hike is a different way of getting around from the trails that lead from the town centre to the summit of the town mountain. If you prefer cycling, there is a designated circular route: the Namsos–Namsos cycling loop via Vemundvik is 26 km long. Take this distance into account when planning your day.
Connections and Local Food
A fast boat that operates year-round connects Namsos, Rørvik and Gutvik. Bicycles are carried, but cars are not. This restriction is relevant when choosing your mode of transport: if you are travelling by bike, you can take it on the fast boat; this connection is not intended for cars. Take this into account when considering your starting point and how you will get around during your trip.
Local food is another tangible discovery in the area. Toddum Gårdsbutikk sells local food from across Namdalen. Fresh Norwegian mozzarella is made at Toddum Gårdsysteri.
