Fortress history, rock art and church art
Hegra Fortress is a national cultural monument and a symbol of Norwegian resistance. Its museum explores several chapters of its history: its construction, neutrality guard service during the First World War, the fighting in 1940 and its restoration in the 1980s. Photographs, uniforms, weapons and personal belongings bring the historical themes to life through tangible objects.
Leirfall offers a different kind of discovery. It is one of the largest rock art sites in Northern Europe. Almost 1,200 rock carvings display a wide variety of motifs and compositions. Those interested in traces of past cultures will find a clear contrast here with the fortress’s military history.
Værnes Church also offers a wealth of historical details. Construction began around 1100, and its medieval roof structures are considered a particularly important cultural treasure. The church also houses the Værnes Chair from 1685, an altarpiece from 1639, frescoes and runic inscriptions. Prestegårdshagen adds to the cultural picture as a historic garden laid out in the English landscape style.
Fjord scenery and outdoor activities
The Håmmårsbukta outdoor recreation area on Skatval is a large, peaceful recreational area by the fjord. Its landscape includes a long shoreline, an extensive forest and interesting traces of past cultures. Walking trails, picnic spots and benches offer different ways to spend time there. The area also has a swimming pier, a visitor pier, a deep-water quay and toilets.
Håmmårsbukta is well suited to boat trips, kayaking and canoeing. The area is also an access point to the outer route of St. Olavsleden, one of the pilgrimage trails. If you would like to combine your stay with hiking or water activities, these options may influence your choice of destinations.
At the Storvika outdoor recreation area, the beach takes centre stage: it is Stjørdal’s most visited beach and bathing spot. It lies in a sheltered bay between coastal rocks, near the centre. Throughout the rest of the year, outside the bathing season, hikers, climbers and surfers also use the area. It includes two climbing walls, whose safety anchors were renewed in 2018.
Local details and other interests
For finding your way around cultural attractions, specific location details are helpful: Stjørdal Museum is in the old vicarage east of Værnes Church and 2 km from the centre. The church is 2 km southeast of the centre and is signposted from the E14. The museum is built around Martin Moe’s collection of antiques and natural history material.
Fishing is another possible interest: the Stjørdal Hunters and Anglers Association sells day, three-day, weekly and seasonal permits for the Stjørdalselva. At Hjelseng, course and conference participants or guests at events can enjoy a locally produced meal, as well as coffee, cake, lunch and dinner. The offer is for groups of 10 to 70 people.
