Skatval – Cultural Heritage and Routes Between History and Nature

Skatval combines impressive traces of the past with opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Håmmårsbukta is home to a Bronze Age burial mound and the Skatval War History Museum; the outdoor recreation area is also ideal for boat trips, kayaking and canoeing. Cultural History in Håmmårsbukta and by the Fjord

The privately run Skatval War History Museum is located in the former ammunition depot at Steinvik Lager, which belonged to the Trøndelag Naval Defence District. The Organisation Todt originally built the depot during the Second World War. The museum’s extensive collection of objects, uniforms, documents and photographs illustrates activities and dramatic events from the Second World War in the inner Trondheimsfjord, particularly in the Åsenfjord. The collection offers a tangible insight into the region’s wartime history.

It is worth checking the museum’s opening arrangements before your visit: it is open to the public on advertised days; group tours can be booked for other times. From the car park at the gate in Håmmårsbukta, a 500 m footpath leads west towards Steinvikholm Castle and the museum. Steinvikholm Castle is an important national cultural heritage site. Olav Engelbrektsson, Norway’s last Catholic archbishop, had the complex built between 1525 and 1532. It was his permanent residence during the turbulent years surrounding the Reformation in Norway. The ruins were excavated between 1894 and 1900 and preserved in the form visible today. The dimensions of the complex also give an impression of its construction: the walls are 4 m thick, while those of the largest cannon tower, Bonden, are 5 m thick.

Those interested in older cultural traces will find other distinctive features on Skatval. Both farms in Opauran have rock surfaces with carvings. Dansarberget has numerous carvings, particularly cup marks, or cup-shaped depressions, measuring 2 to 10 cm in diameter. Near Vinge is Brokhaugen, a presumed burial mound considered one of the largest of its kind in Trøndelag. Its greatest diameter is about 35 m, and it stands just over 5 m high. Håmmårsbukta is also home to a Bronze Age burial mound.

Hiking, Cycling and Water Activities

A marked hiking route runs from Skatval Church to Vassbygda via Svartkammen. After about 2.7 km, the route leaves a gravel road and continues along a trail through forest and marshland. This change in terrain is useful to consider when planning your day. Another way to include Skatval in a longer tour is the 59 km “Stjørdal rundt” cycling loop: it runs from Stjørdal through Skatval to the area around Steinvikholm Castle, then back towards Skatval Church.

Håmmårsbukta is ideal for boat trips, kayaking and canoeing. In the municipality of Stjørdal, the outdoor recreation area is also an access point to the outer route of St. Olavsleden, one of the pilgrim routes.
