Geological History and Coastal Landscapes
On Leka, a complete section of oceanic crust is exposed, extending down to the Earth’s mantle. The rocks are also the subject of the marked Støypet trail, which crosses colourful rocks from the deepest part of the oceanic crust. This means the geology can be explored not only as an abstract feature, but also made the focus of an outing at a specific location. Trollfjell Geopark is a cooperative project involving the municipalities of Brønnøy, Vega, Vevelstad, Sømna, Bindal and Leka, and was recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2019.
Leka’s landscape includes coastal heathland, species-rich coastal meadows, white sandy beaches, smooth rock formations and pebble beaches. The birdlife is also varied, with a particularly large number of seabird species. White-tailed eagles can be seen in flight on Leka almost every day. Hiking, Cycling and Paddling
Leka has 50 marked hiking trails. One of the named routes is Herlaugsløypa, a marked circular trail in the Lekafjellene mountain range. The trail from Solsem crosses coastal heathland and ancient seabed made up of gravel; along the way, you can see Lekamøya in its familiar silhouette. There are also various options on the water: 18 marked paddling routes are listed on Leka across four areas, with varying levels of difficulty. If you prefer travelling by bicycle, there is a circular route on Leka, 28 km long from the harbour. It starts in Husby, 2 km from Skeishavna harbour. Discover Culture and History
Leka Bygdemuseum consists of three parts: the museum farm at Skei, the old school at Leknes and the stone hut along the Skeisnesset cultural trail. The museum farm displays buildings, equipment and tools from Leka’s agricultural and fishing culture of the 19th and 20th centuries. The museum offers seasonal guided tours in summer. These sites provide different ways to explore local history; the museum farm in particular brings agriculture and fishing to life through specific objects and buildings.
The archaeological sites also tell stories of different periods. Skeisnesset includes traces of Stone Age settlements and impressive burial mounds. Herlaugshaugen near Huseby is one of Norway’s largest burial mounds. Investigations in 2023 showed that Herlaugshaugen was a ship burial from the 8th century. Twenty-one painted figures have been documented on the walls of Solsemhula. Investigations and excavations in 1912 and 1913 also uncovered animal and human bones, as well as some tools. Leka therefore offers a range of themes: early settlement traces, a ship burial and finds from the cave.
Getting Here and Other Places to Visit
The M/F Leka ferry runs between the mainland port of Gutvik and Skei on Leka. The crossing from Gutvik to Skei takes about 20 minutes.
