Evje brings together mining history, hiking destinations, waterside experiences and activities in the treetops. As the southernmost part of Setesdal, the area offers a variety of themes for your trip: you might be interested in trails through forests and old mining areas, planning a day at the beach or learning more about local history.

Mining history and museum

The Flåt nickel mine operated from 1872 to 1946 and played an important role in the local community of Evje. On a walk through the Flåt mining area, visitors can scan QR codes to access information about each location. This lets you follow the route while reading about its different stops.

Another historical highlight is the Evjemoen Forsvarsmuseum. It presents military history from 1912 to 2001 and also includes an exhibition about the life and work of politician and Prime Minister Jørgen Løvland. Those interested in different chapters of history will find a different perspective here than at the former nickel mine: the museum focuses on military history and a political figure, while the Flåt mining area highlights the former mining industry and its importance to the local community.

Hikes through varied landscapes

Gruveblikk is a hiking destination with trails through forests and old mining areas. From there, you can enjoy views of the Otra and parts of Evje. The combination of forest, mining history and views makes Gruveblikk a good choice for anyone who wants to experience both the landscape and traces of its former use on an outing.

A different landscape awaits on the route to Abusdalsknuten, which leads through moorland and forest. A four-metre-high tower stands at the summit, offering views in every direction. The two hiking destinations therefore differ in the experiences described: Gruveblikk features old mining areas and views of the Otra, while moorland, forest and the observation tower define the destination at Abusdalsknuten.

Beach, climbing park and rafting

Tangen Beach is 700 metres long, family-friendly and equipped with a floating jetty. Its length gives you a clear sense of what this beach destination offers; the jetty is another distinctive feature. If you’d like to include time by the water in your trip, you can make Tangen a separate focus alongside hiking and cultural destinations.

At Evje Klatrepark, climbing courses take you up into the trees and feature challenging obstacles and ziplines through the treetops. While taking part, visitors are secured to a cable with a safety harness; the park uses a continuous modern safety system. Near Evje, TrollAktiv offers a rafting trip on the Otra. Before paddling through the rapids, participants receive a safety briefing. The climbing park and rafting offer two kinds of active experience: climbing among the trees or taking a trip on the river.

Cycling and choosing the right accommodation

National Cycle Route 3 through Evje og Hornnes partly follows the route of the former Setesdal Railway. If you’d like to combine cycling with another theme, you can consider this route alongside hiking destinations, the beach, the climbing park or historical sites as you plan your trip. These options offer different kinds of experiences rather than prescribing a single type of holiday.

When choosing your holiday apartment or house, it’s therefore worth first deciding which experiences you want to shape your stay. If history and museums are your priority, the Flåt mining area and Evjemoen Forsvarsmuseum offer suitable places to visit. For hiking days, consider Gruveblikk and Abusdalsknuten; the beach, climbing park, cycling route and rafting cater to other interests.
