Åmli combines active experiences at Trogfjell with insights into the region’s cultural history. A scenic via ferrata, a cycling route along a historic railway line and several places to explore nature and local history give your trip a variety of themes. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can decide which experiences you want to shape your stay.

Trogfjell: Climbing routes and hiking trail

There are two via ferrata routes at Trogfjell, offering views of the centre of Åmli and the surrounding landscape. The older route is 240 metres long, with an elevation gain of around 200 metres. If you take the route into account when planning your day, these details will help you gauge its length and elevation gain. From the car park by the Elvarheim Museum, an easy walk of about 15 minutes leads to the starting points. The routes are signposted at the car park and along the path to Trogfjell.

If you prefer to combine nature and culture on foot, Trogfjell has a hiking and cultural trail from the Elvarheim Museum to the summit. Its 13 stops provide information about nature and culture in Åmli. Whether you focus on the path to the summit or one of the climbing routes, Trogfjell offers various ways to make your stay active. The Trogbu day-use cabin is near the centre of Åmli. From there, you can look out over the centre, the Nidelva and a cultural landscape shaped by active farming and forestry.

Cycling along a historic route

The Åmli–Treungen cycling route follows the historic railway line between Åmli and Treungen. It is 34.9 kilometres each way and runs along the Nidelva, passing cultural heritage sites associated with railway operations and timber rafting. The route has only gentle climbs and mostly follows a dedicated track separated from motor traffic. For planning, the one-way distance is particularly useful: it helps you decide whether to make the cycling route a major part of your trip. Along the river, you will encounter traces of railway and timber-rafting history.

Museum, local history and cultural trails

The Elvarheim Museum is housed in the former municipal building, dating from 1925, on the Nidelva in the centre of Åmli. Its core collection includes the collection of trapper Aslak Harstveit, with stuffed animals, trapping equipment and more than 200 knives. The exhibition “Det vesle folket” shows the lives of beavers above and below the water. The second floor also features a violin-making workshop, which opens on request.

For another way to explore local history, Sentrumsløypa leads to ten historic sites in the centre, each marked with an information board. It also serves as a starting point for the local Stolpejakt activity. Rostveitplassen is another of the marked cultural heritage trails in Åmli; information boards stand at the cultural heritage sites. Åmli bygdetun preserves and presents the history of the smallholding Grånheia in the centre. These different offerings let you choose how much to focus on museum visits, local history and trails with information boards.

Water, art and local produce

The bathing park in the centre of Åmli has a swimming area, a beach volleyball court, tennis courts and water-play equipment. At Pan Garden, children can float timber along Vannvegen, a miniature river, just as people did in Åmli in the past. Both places offer something to enjoy if water and activities for children are among your travel interests.

Hillestad Gallery hosts exhibitions and offers art and handicrafts to view and buy. Nearby, Åmli Gårdsmeieri has a farm shop selling dairy products, eggs, meat and other local produce. The farm also offers coffee, opportunities to meet animals and a nature trail. This means there is more to discover beyond the trails and cultural sites in the centre.

The experiences described here help you put together a trip that suits your interests, without having to limit yourself to just one way of exploring.
