Åmli combines active excursions at Trogfjell with insights into local history: Via Ferrata routes and a hiking and cultural trail lead towards the summit. The Elvarheim Museum is in the centre; the former railway station also tells the story of Åmli. There is also a 35 km cycling route that starts and ends in Åmli sentrum.

Trogfjell: Via Ferrata and cultural trail

The two Via Ferrata routes at Trogfjell are signposted from the car park at the Elvarheim Museum and along the path to Trogfjell. From there, it takes about 15 minutes to walk along an easy path to the start of the routes. The second route dates from 2020: it is 350 metres long, has 380 steps and climbs about 200 metres in elevation from the foot of Trogfjell to the summit. These details give you concrete points of reference for fitting the excursion into your day’s plans.

Those interested in nature and culture will also find a hiking and cultural trail with 13 stops. It leads from the Elvarheim Museum to the summit of Trogfjell and provides information along the way about nature and culture in Åmli. The Trogfjellstien trail to the day-trip cabin Trogbu also starts at the Elvarheim Museum, where parking is available.

Insights into Åmli’s history and everyday life

Åmli Bygdetun preserves and shares the history of the former smallholding at Grånheia in Åmli sentrum. Activities for children and young people take place at Grånheia; the kindergarten and school take part in various activities each year. A Christmas market and other activity days are also among the events held there.

At the Elvarheim Museum, the exhibition “Mangfald og Mote” displays traditional costumes from Åmli dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. They form the basis of today’s Åmlibunad. The exhibition “Det vesle folket” is devoted to the life of the beaver above and below water. A film, stuffed beavers, a beaver lodge and display cases for children to explore bring the subject to life in different ways. The museum also has stuffed animals, trapping equipment and more than 200 knives from the collection of hunter Aslak Harstveit.

Åmli railway station also tells the story of the town: in 1910, it was the terminus of the Arendal–Åmli line, until the line was extended to Treungen. The station building, designed in the Swiss style by Harald Kaas, was opened by Prime Minister Wollert Konow. Today, the building is used as a library.

Cycling, a circular route and places to visit

The Åmli–Treungen cycling route starts and ends in Åmli sentrum. The 35 km route is itself a cultural monument and passes old railway stations, bridges and stone bridges, as well as areas for experiencing nature. You can cycle the whole route, ride it as an out-and-back or one-way trip, or cover it in sections. This makes it possible to include the route in your stay as either a longer ride or a series of shorter sections.

For a walk through and around the centre, Sentrumsløypa is a good option. The loop is 1.8 km long, and most of it is suitable for wheelchair users. The walk takes about an hour. The Elvarheim Museum is by the old stone bridge in the centre, on the way to Trogfjell and near a swimming spot.

Åmli aktivitets- og badepark lies just outside the Sentrumsløypa route. It has parking, a toilet, a barbecue area and a beach volleyball court; the park is considered particularly child-friendly. The day-trip cabin Trogbu on Trogfjell is also close to Åmli sentrum. From there, you get a good view of the centre, the Nidelva and the cultural landscape shaped by active farming and forestry.

When searching for a holiday home or holiday apartment in Åmli, the range of holiday activities may help you decide: local history and exhibitions, trails at Trogfjell or cycling along a cultural route.
