In Risør, a historic centre with white-painted wooden houses and narrow streets meets art and coastal history, along with trails and islands by the sea. This makes the town an interesting choice for families who want to plan both cultural discoveries and time outdoors during their holiday. Which side appeals to you most can also guide your search for a holiday apartment in Risør.

Wooden houses, crafts and music

The historic centre is characterised by well-preserved, white-painted wooden houses and narrow streets. The Villvin Craft Market, held in Risør since 1979, is part of the town’s cultural scene. Each year, it brings together more than 100 exhibitors from the Nordic countries. Demonstrations and workshops complement the market, including creative activities for children. Families visiting can explore crafts not only as exhibits, but also through hands-on workshops.

Music and maritime traditions also have their place. The Risør Chamber Music Festival was founded in 1991. Its venues include Risør Church, Hollenderhagen and Stangholmen, as well as other places in the town centre. The Risør Wooden Boat Festival has been held since 1984. Year-round, Risør Kunstpark in the town centre offers exhibitions, workshops and creative experiences. Alongside individual festivals, there are therefore also activities that are not limited to the summer season.

Trails, views and water

Urheia lies above the town centre. The area offers walking and hiking trails, viewpoints, swimming spots, toilets and parking. A cultural trail there includes an old coastal fort from the Second World War. The different features offer visitors a choice of focus: you can combine a trail and a viewpoint with a stop at a swimming spot, or focus on the fort’s history. Risørflekken, a sea mark dating from the age of sailing ships, also affords impressive views over the town and the sea.

Randviktangen and Randvikstranda offer a different experience of nature. Randviktangen is a nature reserve with pleasant trails. Randvikstranda has shallow water and is well suited to a family day by the sea. If you would rather spend your holiday walking and enjoying nature than attending events, you can include these places as separate destinations in your plans, without treating them as part of a visit to the historic centre.

The archipelago includes small islands around Risør. The Stangholmen recreation area consists of two skerries: the lighthouse station is on Stangholmen, while Vestre Stangholmen is undeveloped and much smaller. During the summer season, from June to August, the boat “Agnes” runs as a shuttle from the town centre to Stangholmen. The archipelago was made accessible after the skerries and islets were donated to the municipality in the 1930s on the condition that their attractions would remain open to the public.

Experiences connected to the sea

Risør Aquarium is the only saltwater aquarium in Southern Norway. Activities on offer include digital drawing, crab fishing and fish feeding. To get to the aquarium, take bus number 5 to Risør town centre, then walk along the harbour for about ten minutes. The guest harbour is centrally located at Stranden in the old Tangen district, as well as in the inner harbour at the market square, giving you two named harbour areas to help you find your way around town.

Those interested in the history of boats and shipbuilding can also visit Risør Coastal Culture Centre on Moen. It preserves and shares the boatbuilding and shipbuilding history of Risør municipality. Activities include wood carving, trying out a home-built boat and crab fishing from the quay. The aquarium and coastal history offer different focuses: salt water and fish on the one hand, and crafts and the history of boatbuilding on the other.

When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these aspects you want to shape your stay: cultural activities, trails and views, a family day by shallow water, or maritime experiences. This lets you tailor your search to your family’s interests without assuming that every activity has to fit into the same day’s schedule.
