Setesdal culture in Rysstad and Valle
The main building of the Setesdalsmuseet is located in Rysstad, in the municipality of Valle. The museum has specialist expertise in the preservation of buildings, traditional costumes and old photographs. The museum building houses permanent exhibitions year-round, as well as changing summer exhibitions. This offers a cultural focus that highlights both Setesdal’s architectural heritage and its clothing and historical photographic collections.
Hylestad Church in Rysstad also tells a story of change across the river: the octagonal church was built in 1839 to replace an older church on the other side of the Otra. A copy of the carved portal stands at the entrance. Further traces of the past can be found in Rygnestad and Tveiten. Nordigard Rygnestad has roots dating back to the Middle Ages. A stone there may date from the Middle Ages and could indicate that the site was used as a Thing (assembly) place long ago.
Waterfalls, landscapes and hikes
Gloppefoss is one of the highest waterfalls in Setesdal and carries a large volume of water throughout the summer season. The marked trail runs from Road 9 through the Veiåjuvet Canyon to the waterfall; the hike is estimated to take about two hours. The trailhead is approximately 9 km north of the centre of Valle. There is a parking area by the gate on Road 9. The route through the canyon and the waterfall at the end make this a distinct excursion alongside the region’s cultural attractions.
Brokke is a starting point for hikes in the Setesdal Vesthei-Ryfylkeheiane protected landscape area in both summer and winter. The road from Brokke in Valle to Suleskard in Sirdal also passes through this landscape: it is 42 km long, with 22 km within the protected area. If you are planning a drive through the mountains, you can take this distance into account when planning your day, without confusing it with a hiking route.
For winter sports, Brokke Alpinsenter offers groomed slopes, a snow park and a ski school. Another way to experience the mountains actively is the Via Ferrata route to Straumsfjellet in Valle. It is 1.5 km long and gains 550 metres in elevation. The specific information on distance and elevation gain helps distinguish this route from the area’s other natural and cultural attractions.
