Bykle offers many different reasons to visit: in Hovden, winter sports and marked mountain paths take centre stage, while nature areas, water activities and culture reveal other sides of the region. The holiday apartment that suits your stay also depends on whether you are mainly planning to ski cross-country or downhill, go hiking, or visit museums and historic places.

Cross-country ski trails and downhill skiing in Hovden

Cross-country skiing enthusiasts can enjoy a network of 160 kilometres of trails groomed daily in Hovden. In addition, the Hovden Cross-Country Arena has 15 kilometres of competition trails built to national standards and a dedicated roller-ski track. These details describe different cross-country skiing options: alongside the trail network, there is an arena with competition courses and roller-ski facilities.

There is also a clear choice for downhill skiing. The Hovden Alpine Centre has a 42.5-kilometre piste network and eight lifts or drag lifts, reaching heights of over 1,200 metres above sea level. There are 33 runs in total, with a maximum vertical drop of 420 metres. Hovden's downhill offering ranges from easy, gentle runs to more technical and challenging options. You can plan your days around cross-country skiing, downhill skiing or a mix of activities.

Mountain paths and nature experiences

Hovden has marked hiking trails and access to the DNT route network. A special trail awaits you at Hovdenuten: the path leads over stone steps built by Sherpas, and there is a day cabin near the summit. If you would prefer another way into the mountains, take the summer lift to Storenos, at 1,183 metres; marked hiking trails continue into the mountains from there. Storenos is also the highest family-friendly summit hike marked from the centre of Hovden.

The Hovden Landscape Protection Area is in the municipality of Bykle and includes Galten as a hiking destination. The area's peatlands are another notable feature: the Vidmyr Nature Reserve near Hovden, together with peatland areas in the Hovden Landscape Protection Area, forms one of the region's largest contiguous peatland areas. This gives you a choice between mountain paths and protected landscapes as different focuses for day trips.

Water, activity and a quieter break

The Hegni recreation area offers a sandy beach, bathing jetties and lawns for ball games and play. You can also rent canoes, kayaks, pedal boats, rowing boats and SUP boards there to explore Lake Hartevatn from the water. If you would rather stay on land, the nine-hole Ørnefjell Golf Course offers another activity in a green mountain setting. Hovden Fjellbad is open year-round and has a family pool and a sauna on the riverbank.

The Otra begins north of Hovden and is one of southern Norway's longest waterways. It has a substantial trout population, and fishing permits are available for the areas where fishing is permitted. This lets you plan your day around activities on the water, by the shore or in the mountains.

Church traditions and history

Bykle is home to a rosemaling-decorated church dating from around 1620. Huldreheimen offers another perspective on the church settlement, with a walk among old buildings and sweeping views of the village. Byklestigen is a restored historic mountain path, where illustrated information boards provide insights into the route's history.

In Hovden, the Hovden jernvinnemuseum tells the story of Iron Age production during the Viking era. Smoke, light, sound and smell are all used to bring the history to life; the museum operates on a self-service basis. The Lislestog Museum, which is open to the public, displays wooden houses and old objects. If you would like to include culture and nature in your trip, you can explore a range of themes: historic iron production, traditional buildings and an old mountain path.

The Støylen Wine Bar offers bookable wine tastings for groups and also holds wine courses regularly throughout the year. Hovden is accessible by bus or car. More information about the local area is available for Hovden I Setesdal and the village of Bykle.
