Bykle combines remarkable cultural sites with trails that offer different perspectives on the surrounding area. At Bykle Church, you’ll encounter traditional rose painting and a church dating from around 1620; Huldreheimen and Jarebu offer different experiences. You can shape your trip around historic buildings, walks, and hiking destinations.

Church, Wooden Houses, and Museum

Bykle Church covers an area of less than 70 square meters. Its traditional rose painting and age—it dates from around 1620—make it a special destination for visitors interested in culture.

Lislestog is a collection of wooden houses and old objects. It includes two storehouses, a post house, two saunas, a forge, a mill house, a dairy house, and a mountain dairy hut. The different types of buildings give visitors a tangible glimpse of historic architecture and objects. Those particularly interested in traditional buildings will find a different focus here than at the church.

Huldreheimen is an especially good example of a museum associated with a national-romantic, bourgeois understanding of culture. Here, you can combine a walk among old buildings with expansive views across the entire church settlement of Bykle. The museum thus offers both a cultural destination and a walk shaped by the buildings and views of the settlement.

Walks and Hiking Destinations

Jarebu is a day-hike cabin on Jarekollen, near the center of Bykle. From there, you can enjoy views of the wild reindeer range in Setesdal, Setesdal Austhei, and Setesdal Vesthei. Jarebu therefore offers a way to combine a hike with expansive views of these landscapes. There are three different ways to reach the cabin.

The restored historic trail Byklestigen is also nearby. It is about 1 kilometer long and lies 4–5 kilometers south of the village center. Information boards line the trail. Its approximate length and the boards make it a different kind of outing from the hike to the Jarebu day-hike cabin: here, the historic trail itself is the focus.

Opening Times and Reasons to Visit

Huldreheimen is open seasonally from June 23 to August 9. Bykle Church is open seasonally from June 23 to August 16, and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The opening periods overlap, but do not end on the same day. If you’d like to visit both cultural sites, you can take these different time frames into account when planning your trip.

Another possible reason to visit is Bykledagen, held every year on the first Saturday in September. This fixed date can help you plan your stay around the event.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Bykle, you can consider which of these experiences matter most for your trip. Visitors interested in culture can explore the church, Lislestog, and Huldreheimen; those looking for outdoor activities can choose Jarebu or Byklestigen as an excursion. These details describe different experiences in and around Bykle without combining them into a single route.
