Voerendaal combines a varied landscape with green fields, sunken lanes, historic farmsteads and characteristic village centres. Between the Via Belgica, archaeological traces, wine landscapes and varied routes, different facets come together here in close proximity.

Landscape and trails

Land van Kalk is a Euroregional plateau made of Kunradersteen that stretches from Aachen via Bocholtz to Voerendaal. The Parkstad Route is a 35 km adventure route between Simpelveld and Schinnen, designed for hikers and cyclists. The 8.8 km “Medieval adventures in Voerendaal” hiking route has a different focus. Parking is available for this route at Voerendaal railway station.

The Kunradersteen Route in Land van Kalk is 10.5 km long. The Route des Vins makes it possible to explore the wine landscape of Voerendaal and its surroundings on foot. In addition, wine routes of approximately 12 km and 8 km in length lead through the South Limburg wine landscape around Ubachsberg and Winthagen in Land van Kalk. The hiking routes are easy to walk and suitable for hikers of all levels.

Culture and history

The Via Belgica crosses the municipality of Voerendaal. In Voerendaal and Heerlen, its exact course is known over almost 7 km. Villa Voerendaal is considered the largest Roman villa in the Netherlands. A permanent mini-exhibition featuring finds from the villa can be visited in Voerendaal town hall.

The archaeological site “Vindplaats Voerendaal – Onder de kerktoren” includes an app experience with the virtual archaeologist Archie, who provides information about the origins of Voerendaal. The Sint-Laurentiuskerk is the only church in the Netherlands to have been consecrated by a pope. During Open Monument Day, various monuments in Voerendaal open their doors to visitors.

The castles also shape the cultural landscape: Kasteel Cortenbach is one of four castles that can be visited around the centre of Voerendaal.

Wine, stone and golf

Wijngoed Fromberg offers tours, wine tastings and various combination packages. At the Kunradersteen quarry, guided tours explain how Kunradersteen is processed for modern applications. In this way, viticulture and the stone that characterises the region each take centre stage with their own offerings.

Golf & Country Club Hoenshuis has an 18-hole golf course in the forests and hills of Voerendaal. Hoenshuis Golf Academy offers individual or group lessons, clinics and masterclasses.
