Holiday apartment in Roerdalen: Castles, mills and nature

Montfort Castle stands on a ridge in the water-rich Vlootbeek valley. It was built around 1260 by Hendrik van Gelre, Prince-Bishop of Liège. A visitor information centre on the theme „a castle and its landscape“ has been established in the restored hunting lodge. Visitors can also view the tower ruins and medieval vaulted cellars, walk through the castle garden and enjoy the view from the panoramic terrace.

Culture and history

Aerwinkel Castle was built in 1856 in the neo-Gothic style by the Roermond architect Pierre Cuijpers. The estate includes a 7-hectare park that has been included in the European Garden Heritage Network and borders the Munnichsbos forest, where there are numerous hiking opportunities. The history of Landgoed Kasteel Daelenbroeck in Herkenbosch dates back to 1311. At that time, a residential and hunting castle was to be built in the marshy Roerdal area.

Religious and regional history are also present at specific locations. Kerkberg in Sint Odiliënberg has been a place where Christians pray for at least 1,300 years. The basilica was restored in the 19th century by the renowned Roermond architect Pierre Cuypers; its windows were made by the Roermond stained-glass artist Joep Nicolas. The Roerstreek Museum is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays from 13:30 to 17:00.

One of the notable mills is the Gitstappermolen in Vlodrop, a historic watermill dating from 1377. It is a Rijksmonument and a breastshot watermill powered by the water of the Rothenbach. The Molen van Verbeek in Sint Odiliënberg is a grain mill and the only stone hilltop grain mill east of the Meuse. It welcomes visitors for viewings or guided tours; visits outside regular opening hours can be arranged by appointment. The Prins Bernhard Molen in Melick is a post mill, a Dutch type of mill that was already found in the country in the 14th century, and offers guided tours by appointment.

The Gitstappermolen also has a mill shop selling baking mixes, flour, seeds, fresh Flur spelt bread and an extensive range of Limburg regional products. The spelt bread is freshly baked on Saturdays and Sundays.

Nature and landscape

Landgoed Hoosden is a nature area in the Roerdal northwest of Sint Odiliënberg. It was formed through the silting-up of several old bends of the Roer. Swamp forests, spring forests, wet meadows and forests consisting predominantly of alder trees characterize the area; at the same time, Hoosden is a Natura 2000 area.

The De Meinweg National Park presents a distinctive landscape form. It features a terrace landscape unique in the Netherlands, with three steep transitions and a total difference in elevation of 50 metres. Small fen waters, extensive forests and heathlands lie between the terraces. The adder occurs in Limburg only in De Meinweg National Park; wild boar can also be observed there.

Access to MERU-Bospark is free, and the grounds can be used for walking. There is a pond with a bridge on which a pavilion stands, as well as rhododendrons around the pond and throughout the park. Another viewpoint is Geluksplek 9 „De Torens van de Basiliek“: there is a bench on the banks of the Roer with a view of the water and the basilica towers.

Routes and visits

The tour of Daelenbroeck Castle leads from the original vaults through the Knights' Hall to the restored tower, and then back along the moat to the garden hall. Various cycling and hiking trails through the varied landscapes of De Meinweg National Park start at the Gitstappermolen. For more than 40 years, horse-drawn wagon rides through the park have also been offered there; route information and advice are provided as well.

For longer hikes, the tenth stage of the Pieterpad runs from Swalmen to Montfort via Sint Odiliënberg and through the Sweeltje nature reserve. It also crosses an old dune ridge and ends in Montfort. The Cultuurroute Frymerson is designed as a shorter route: the 4.90 km walking trail starts at junction 79 near Landgoed Frymerson and passes monumental sites in Sint Odiliënberg.

At MERU Vlodrop, groups can book 1.5-hour guided tours from Monday to Saturday by appointment, including a refreshment. Oetsjpanning de Meuleberg is a rest stop for cyclists and hikers. The various mills, castle complexes, wooded areas and paths do not form some invented uniform setting; instead, each represents its own historical, landscape-related or practical point of interest.
