In the centre of Heerlen, an extensive collection of murals unfolds – wall paintings and graffiti works. The city combines a visible present with Roman history, mining culture and paths through heathland and woodland landscapes.
Cityscape and the present day
A 4 km-long street-art route passes the city's most important murals as well as smaller, hidden works. The works include “De Vreemdeling” by the artist duo Os Gemeos at Schelmenhofje. “De Koolpiet” refers to Heerlen's mining past and won the Dutch Streetart Award in 2016.
SCHUNCK is a museum of modern and contemporary art and architecture in Heerlen. In and from the monumental Glaspaleis, it offers an extensive programme of exhibitions, lectures, debates and special projects.
Roman and mining history
In the Romeins Kwartier, the important Roman settlement of Coriovallum lies beneath the present-day city. This is where visitors can discover this history. The Romeins Museum is due to open in 2028 around the archaeological remains of the baths of Coriovallum. Due to new construction work, the Romeins Museum is closed until 2028.
The Nederlands Mijnmuseum presents Heerlen's mining history through stories from underground and above-ground operations. Visitors can experience aspects of the mining past across four floors; in addition, the former shaft and winding building of Oranje-Nassaumijn I remains a museum site. Landsfort Herle makes the cultural and historical heritage above and below ground visible and accessible.
A route developed jointly with Visit Zuid-Limburg takes visitors on a discovery tour through medieval Heerlen. The Schelmentoren is open exclusively on special days; advance online ticket purchase is recommended for a guaranteed visit. Kasteel Hoensbroek is one of the largest moated castles in the Netherlands.
Nature and trails
Heerlen lies in the hilly countryside and between two stream valleys. The Brunssummerheide near Heerlen comprises heathland and woodland landscapes with marked hiking trails. It is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including nightjars, moor frogs, bog gliders, five species of woodpecker and various bats. Marked hiking routes on the Brunssummerheide are approximately 4.9 km and 4.7 km long.
The Terworm hiking route leads through the nature of South Limburg and along the history of the estate with its castle. The route through the estate passes avenues lined with linden trees and orchards with old Limburg apple varieties. A 2.0 km-long inclusive route entitled “Het Mijnverleden op straat” was developed specifically for wheelchair users, blind people and people with visual impairments.
Getting around Heerlen
From Heerlen Centraal railway station, you can walk directly into the city centre via the Maankwartier. OV-Fiets rental bicycles are also available at the station.
