Mook en Middelaar lies between the Maas and the Mookerheide. Here, forests and heathlands, a glacial push-moraine landscape and culturally and historically valuable elements combine to create a varied landscape.
Nature
The Mookerheide is a forest and heathland area east of Mook in the Dutch province of Limburg. Numerous differences in elevation shape the area and offer views over the Maas. The “Rond Jachtslot de Mookerheide” hiking route passes a lookout tower with panoramic views over the surrounding landscape.
The Sint-Jansberg also combines various types of landscape: it includes a wooded slope, a watermill, a marshland area and fields. In the Sint-Jansberg nature reserve, winding paths lead over the hills and along the meadows; elevated points offer views.
Water
The Mookerplas recreational area near Plasmolen offers opportunities for boating, fishing and hiking. At Mookerplas, there are wheelchair-accessible entrance gates as well as parking spaces for people with a disabled parking permit. There is also a sandy beach, a sunbathing lawn, play equipment and several dining options.
Mookerplas, also popularly known as “De Siep”, has an open connection to the Maas; boats can also be launched there. An information board with an overview map is located at TIP Plasmolen. Route maps for hikers and cyclists are also sold there.
History
Jachtslot Mookerheide is an Art Nouveau hunting lodge built in 1904. Guided tours for individuals and groups are offered at the Jachtslot. Coffee, lunch, drinks and dinner are also available there every day.
Bovenste Plasmolen dates from 1725. It was initially used for more than 100 years to produce paper before being converted in 1846 for grinding and shelling grain. The overshot and undershot watermill has a waterwheel that can be supplied with water from both below and above.
The remains of a Roman villa are located on the Sint-Jansberg; it is considered the largest civilian building from Roman times found in the Netherlands. The main building was approximately 84 × 22 metres in size. The site has been a legally protected archaeological monument since 1978; its history is made visible above ground by a pipe structure.
In the fourth century AD, the Romans built a bridge over the Maas near Cuijk and Middelaar. Its remains are among the remains of only two Roman bridges found in the Netherlands. An information board with a work of art about the Roman bridge that was found stands on the Maas near Middelaar.
During Open Monument Day in Mook en Middelaar, there is a cycling route of approximately 20 kilometres, with options for shortening the route, along all municipal, provincial and national monuments in the municipality. Some monuments are open for viewing, while others have information boards.
Routes
The “Mooks ommetje” cycling route starts and ends at Herberg Restaurant 't Zwaantje in Mook and is 23.5 kilometres long. It leads through forests, across open fields and along the Maas. Along the way, it passes atmospheric villages and historic sites.
The long-distance cycle route Via Romana runs through the varied landscape between Nijmegen and Xanten and passes numerous Roman attractions. The Mook mountain-bike route runs through the Mookse and Groesbeekse forests, is signposted with blue arrows and has a medium technical difficulty level.
The Liberation Route Europe passes several sites of importance to the Second World War in the municipalities of Heumen, Cuijk, Grave and Mook en Middelaar and includes a ferry crossing from Cuijk to Middelaar.
