Niersdal comprises grassland, moist tall-herb vegetation, willow and poplar swamp forest, tributaries and pools for amphibians. Its diverse flora and fauna include herons, storks, kingfishers, swans, geese, ducks, woodpeckers, cormorants, crows and buzzards, among others. Various orchid species and marsh gentians grow in the area around De Diepen and Sint Jansberg.
Gennep’s history on short and longer explorations
Genneper Huys is now a ruin near the town of Gennep, at the point where the Niers flows into the Maas. The fortress played an important role in the Eighty Years’ War; in 1641, the army of Frederik Hendrik van Oranje besieged Genneper Huys. Hiking and cycling routes, information points and an exhibition make its history accessible to visitors.
Martinustoren is a neo-Gothic gate tower built in 1869, a Rijksmonument, and is attributed to Pierre Cuypers. The Martinustoren visitor centre provides information about the cultural history and nature of Gennep and the Maas en Niers region, and is the starting point for various cycling and hiking routes. The Liberation Route Gennep starts at the Oude Martinustoren and passes information panels and listening stones that provide information about the events during the liberation of Gennep.
Museums and special buildings
Museum Het Petershuis has a permanent collection of archaeological finds, scale models and historical information about Gennep and the region. Eight temporary exhibitions are held there each year, focusing on contemporary artists or a current theme.
Museum De Oude Pottenbakkerij preserves the last flowerpot factory in the Netherlands that is still maintained in its old, original condition, including its wood-fired kiln. It is also home to the only functioning ceramic organ in the world. Private guided tours are available for groups by arrangement.
Kasteel Huys Heijen became a true moated castle after a branch of the Maas flowed around the house; the castle lord and visual artist Peter Roovers created sculptures there. During the opening hours of the Tourist Info Gennep, the Oude Stadhuis offers a free tour on the Lower Rhine Renaissance, provided that no weddings or other activities are taking place there.
Churches, art and townscapes
The Sint Martinus Kerk in Gennep is a Rijksmonument, and its crypt houses a small religious museum. The Hervormde kerk in Gennep is the oldest small church on Dutch territory built using its own funds. The Keramiekmuur displays ceramic miniatures by Pieter Arts.
The Parochiekerk on Raadhuisplein in Ottersum was put into use in 1931 and has an Art Deco interior. Its tower has four large church bells; from the large sound openings, there are views of the village and the surrounding area. Kapel St. Antonius Abt stands in the smallest settlement in the municipality of Gennep and is the oldest chapel in the municipality of Gennep.
Cycling and regional delicacies
The Smaakparelroute combines a cycling experience with strawberry picking, Limburgse vlaaien from a bakery in Ottersum, fresh eggs and asparagus bread. The Zwermen over de kernen cycling route passes through the districts of the municipality of Gennep and introduces you to them.
