Maastricht combines urban history, unconventional art, fortifications and a distinctive limestone landscape. At the Maastricht Museum, the permanent timeline ranges from prehistory to the industrial city.
Culture
The Bonnefanten in Maastricht presents permanent collections and temporary exhibitions on non-mainstream art and artists. At the Natural History Museum Maastricht, visitors can discover enormous mosasaurs and immerse themselves in the world of the Cretaceous Sea. The Cretaceous collection comprises around 105,000 fossils from the marl layers of the Upper Cretaceous, the so-called Maastrichtian, dating from 71 to 65.4 million years ago. Outstanding pieces include remains of enormous mosasaurs and sea turtles, as well as fragments of land-dwelling dinosaurs. Overall, the museum manages more than half a million objects.
The Schatkamer displays ecclesiastical art and relics from various centuries. The exhibits include a Byzantine reliquary from the 9th century and a Viking horn containing relics of apostles. The Basilica of Saint Servatius was built over the tomb of Saint Servatius, the first bishop of Maastricht, and has been an important pilgrimage church for centuries. It is also known for its robust Romanesque architecture and centuries-old crypt.
History
The history of the fortifications can be seen at various locations. Fort Sint Pieter offers guided tours during which visitors can see, among other things, the water well, the gun embrasures and the cannon gallery. The Maastricht casemates form a network of passages and mine galleries created in 1575 and 1825. They can be visited as part of a tour led by an Official Maastricht Guide.
At the edge of the Sphinxkwartier lies Frontenpark, a seemingly wild urban park where nature, fortification history and industrial heritage come together. This means that different historical layers stand side by side in Maastricht: ecclesiastical evidence, military installations and traces of industrial use.
Nature
The Sint-Pietersberg nature area is a special Natura 2000 site near Maastricht. It comprises calcareous grasslands, distant views and unique flora and fauna. The calcareous grasslands, flower-rich slopes and forests provide a habitat for rare orchids, butterflies and birds. The area offers opportunities for hiking, cycling and mountain biking.
The ENCI quarry is a former limestone quarry on Sint-Pietersberg that has developed into a special nature area with hiking trails and viewpoints. The area covers around 150 hectares and features significant changes in elevation, lime-rich soil and bodies of water. The Krijtwandeling Sint-Pietersberg provides insights into the unique limestone landscape of Zuid-Limburg, with historic buildings, deep valleys, impressive quarries, industrial heritage and diverse flora and fauna.
Getting around
Arriva route 12 connects Maastricht Centraal with the Oog van Sint-Pieter stop at the foot of Fort Sint Pieter in approximately 14 minutes. Fort Sint Pieter and the ENCI quarry can be reached from Maastricht Centraal station by OV-fiets in approximately 16 minutes. The Krijtwandeling Sint-Pietersberg is challenging, requires good physical fitness and sturdy footwear, and is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.
Food and drink
At the Smaaklokaal of De Bisschopsmolen, visitors can have breakfast, enjoy a snack or have lunch. De Bisschopsmolen bakes bread and special grain products made from 100% Kollenberger spelt from the Zuid-Limburg region.
