Landgraaf is known for its cultural history, landscapes and leisure activities. Historic buildings, reminders of the mining past and paths through varied landscapes meet winter sports, music and an extensive theme park. As a result, the town reveals several distinct facets.

Culture

One of the older traces is the Strijthagermolen. For centuries, it ground grain using the water power of the Strijthagerbeek; the earliest known reference to the mill dates from 1630. The Heilige Drievuldigheid also dates back a long way: its origins lie in a simple brick-built hall church from 1726. Today, it houses several remarkable pieces from the 17th and 18th centuries.

You encounter castle history at several buildings. Slot Schaesberg in Landgraaf is the ruin of a 16th-century castle, and the outlines of the associated 17th-century Bauhoeve have also been preserved. Kasteel Strijthagen dates back to the 13th century; the present castle is an 18th-century building constructed on the foundations of its medieval predecessor. The Slothoeve belonging to Kasteel Strijthagen dates from 1690.

The Beeldenwandeling Nieuwenhagen leads past works of art in public spaces, including “Stier op de Driepoot”, “D’r Mathies” and a Jewish memorial. The Landgraaf defensive line is another notable feature of the landscape. It probably dates from the second half of the 14th century and was a defensive structure that is still visible in some places as a hollow way. Between 1926 and 1931, a settlement was built in Lauradorp on the meadows near the ribbon villages of Waubach and Groenstraat.

Rimburg offers further historical impressions. The Rimburg water tower and its associated clean-water cellar have Rijksmonument status. The water tower was built in 1925–1926 by the former “Laura en Vereniging” coal mine in Eygelshoven. In old Rimburg, a traditional bakehouse is also heated on certain days, where you can sample a piece of old-fashioned baked Vlaai.

Landscape

Park Gravenrode is a tourist and recreational area on the border of Landgraaf, Kerkrade and Heerlen. In this area, the Strijthagerbeek flows through a beautiful wooded stream valley. Another striking landscape feature is the Wilhelminaberg, which was created from spoil material from the Staatsmijn Wilhelmina. An open-air staircase with 508 steps leads up its slope to the summit. From there, at 225 metres above NAP, you can enjoy views across the Euregio.

Experiences

The Parkstadroute is an approximately 34 km-long cycling and hiking route that runs through Landgraaf. The Adventure Valley Trail has a different character: it is an adventurous, freely accessible hiking trail along the climbing park that leads to the mountain’s mining past.

For winter sports, there is SnowWorld Landgraaf with five ski slopes and eight lifts, including a six-person chairlift. Pinkpop holds a permanent place in the events calendar: it is a music festival held annually around Whitsun in Landgraaf. Mondo Verde covers 250,000 m² and is a theme park with gardens and exotic animals; it also offers exciting attractions. The park is wheelchair accessible and includes, among other features, paved paths and adapted sanitary facilities.
