Carpegna between forests, pastures and history

Carpegna combines a striking mountain landscape with many opportunities for active days and cultural exploration. The limestone massifs of Sasso Simone and Simoncello reach heights of around 1,200 metres; forests, pastures and heavily eroded clay badlands shape this landscape. The area was declared a nature park in 1994 and is home to numerous rare plants and animals. The Carpegna area has numerous trails for hiking, mountain biking or horseback riding. The range of activities therefore extends from observing nature to energetic tours.

Nature trails, cycling and forest adventure courses

A trail to the Sassi begins at the Cantoniera di Carpegna and leads through the forest. Several nature trails start from Carpegna Park, located at the foot of Monte Carpegna and at the beginning of the Parco Sasso Simone e Simoncello nature reserve. These include trail no. 118 to the base of Sasso Simone and Simoncello. For cycling enthusiasts, the salita del Pirata is an interesting route: it begins in the centre of Carpegna. Marco Pantani rode this route and used the climbs around Carpegna to prepare for his victories. The Carpegna Park Adventure Park offers a different kind of experience, with twelve courses in a Turkey oak forest. The stations include climbing elements, zip lines, suspended passages, Tibetan bridges and a cycling element running between the trees.

Fortresses, churches and regional history

The fortified town of Città del Sole was conceived by the Medici in spring 1554 and completely abandoned around ten years after its construction. As an archaeological site, it can only be reached on foot, on horseback or by bicycle. The Palazzo dei Principi di Carpegna is considered a palace-like fortress and was inspired by fortified Florentine-style villas. The Romanesque Pieve di San Giovanni Battista is located just over two kilometres from the centre of Carpegna, on the border with the municipality of Frontino, and dates back to the 12th century. It is considered one of the oldest church buildings not only in the park area, but in the entire Montefeltro region.

Museums and crafts as special discoveries

The Museo dei Borghi is located in the deconsecrated church of S. Maria della Misericordia in Castacciaro di Carpegna. Its visual, tactile and acoustic exhibition conveys the rural surroundings, activities and peasant life of Carpegna’s fifteen hamlets. The Museo della Pineta in the hamlet of Cippo is housed in a former forestry building and presents interactive materials about the forest of Monte Carpegna, including animal calls, animal tracks and the layering of plants. The Geoteca della vallata di Carpegna conveys the valley’s geological history through painted reconstructions as well as shell fossils, sea urchins and minerals. At the Antica Stamperia Carpegna, fabrics have been printed by hand for six generations using wooden blocks and traditional rust-coloured dye.

Choosing the right holiday apartment in Carpegna

Carpegna is therefore a destination where nature trails, sports routes, historic buildings, museums and crafts exist side by side. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home, you can first decide whether hiking, cycling, history, geology or regional traditions should be the main focus. Choosing a holiday apartment in Carpegna can thus be guided by your preferred holiday pace: nature and highland landscapes take centre stage in a different way than churches, exhibitions or historic printing techniques.
