Montesecco: Church Art and Panoramic Views

Montesecco lies at an elevation of about 456 metres and is one of the most significant viewpoints in the upper valley of the Cesano River. From there, both the Adriatic coast and Monte Catria can be seen. Stone houses and small, enclosed piazzas define the village; a sweeping view opens up in front of the two churches. When choosing a location, the views of the Adriatic coast and Monte Catria, church art, and hiking and cycling can be considered as different focal points.

Churches and Art in the Village Landscape

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta in Montesecco is a parish church whose construction is dated approximately to the 17th century. It preserves an oil painting from the late 17th century attributed to Clemente Maioli of Ferrara, depicting the Madonna and Child together with Saints Anthony of Padua, Francis of Assisi and Sebastian. The Chiesa di San Sebastiano in Montesecco also preserves the late-15th-century fresco Madonna della Misericordia, attributed to the school of the Marches.

Traces of History and Regional Culture

During excavations at the site known as Madonna del Piano, a large polychrome mosaic was reported in 1969. The flooring may have belonged to a large suburban villa complex from the late imperial period; the building in which the flooring was located is not known. The MEZZARIA project promoted the area from an artistic, cultural and oenogastronomic perspective. The project was based on Montesecco, the people living and working there, and the land.

In the wider regional surroundings of Montesecco are the Museo Nori de' Nobili, the Fondazione Villa Del Bali' and the Museo della Civiltà Contadina, Grotte, Arte Sacra. These three establishments are museums. The Eremo di Grottafucile, a monastery, is also located in this wider regional area.

Routes for Hiking and Cycling

The Cammino dei Bronzi Dorati is an approximately 88-kilometre circular hiking trail around Pergola in the Province of Pesaro and Urbino that passes through Montesecco. For this trail, a main route is available as a GPX file, along with a mountain-bike route and alternative sections with descriptions.

Another connection is provided by the I borghi di Montesecco, Monterolo e Montevecchio route: it leads from Pergola via the Strada Provinciale Sterleto to Montesecco and then continues for three kilometres along the ridge of a hill.

The sixth Ciclopolverosa di Montesecco was scheduled for 19 June 2022 in Montesecco di Pergola as the third stage of the MTB Marche Cup.

Several elevations lie around Montesecco: Monte Rotondo and Monte Raggio are mountains, Colle Ameno is a peak, and Monte Termine is also a mountain.
