Holiday apartment in Montefelcino – castle, churches and festivals on the Metauro
Montefelcino lies on the Metauro River and combines a distinctive riverside setting with a walled historic centre, churches, museums and regional events. When choosing a holiday apartment in Montefelcino, you can therefore consider different priorities: historical discoveries in the town, a reserved museum visit, regional cuisine or a stay centred around a festival.
Historic Centre and Impressive Buildings
The historic centre of Montefelcino is surrounded by walls. Access is through a gate that forms part of the former town hall. Montefelcino Castle probably originated around the year 1000, giving the town a historical connection reaching far back into the past.
A notable stop is the Palazzo del Feudatario. Count Fabio Landriani, Lord of Montefelcino and vassal of Guidobaldo della Rovere, had the palazzo built between 1571 and 1583. Inside the building, a monumental fireplace bears the Rovere coat of arms; the surviving architectural elements also include capitals, sail vaults and a sandstone portal.
The Church of Saints Peter and Paul contains a baptismal font from the 16th or 17th century as well as a popular-style painting of the Baptism of Jesus from 1700. A sandstone slab from the former church can also be seen there. Its Latin inscription refers to the parish priest Tiberio and the sculptor Cristoforo. The Church of San Severo is also located in the vicinity of Montefelcino; it dates from the late 13th century and contains a wooden crucifix from the 15th century.
Museum, History and Living Traditions
The Museo degli antichi mestieri itineranti displays bicycles once used by travelling craftsmen and merchants, documenting the period from the 1920s to the 1950s of the 20th century. The museum also includes a collection of photographs and original objects from the First and Second World Wars. Visits to the Museo degli antichi mestieri itineranti are possible by prior reservation.
Events also draw on the region's history. The municipality and the Pro Loco of Montefelcino organise a historical re-enactment of the Battle of the Metauro in Sterpeti. From 25 September to 27 September 2026, Montefelcino will also host the 18th Festa dell'Uva. At the Mercatino del Feudatario, several inns and osterias offer typical dishes from the cuisine of the Marche.
Location on the Metauro and Regional Planning
Montefelcino is 5 km from the Via Flaminia. The approach is via Ponte degli Alberi, 21.7 km from Fano, through the small, picturesque valley of the Rio Puto. When selecting a holiday apartment or holiday home, these different reference points can help structure your planning: you decide whether the riverside location, the historic centre, a museum visit or an event date should form the focus of your trip.
