Calcinelli is located on the old Via Flaminia in the plain at the edge of the hills, on the left bank of the Metauro. The Ponte di Calcinelli spans the Metauro between Calcinelli and Montemaggiore.

La Valorosa: historic cycling tour in the Metauro Valley

A special event in the annual calendar is La Valorosa, a historic cycling event held every year in July, starting in Calcinelli. From there, it passes through the municipalities of Saltara, Cartoceto, Serrungarina and Monte Maggiore al Metauro. Its historic character comes from the bicycles and clothing styled after bygone eras. The route runs through the Metauro Valley and also includes sections on unpaved roads. For planning the day, the unpaved sections can be treated as separate passages with breaks. This establishes two points for travel planning: La Valorosa takes place in July, and the route also includes unpaved sections.

The hiking trail along the Metauro: approximately 5.5 km during the summer low-water period

The “Il F. Metauro da Calcinelli a Tavernelle” hiking trail begins at the Ponte di Calcinelli and is completed entirely on foot. It is approximately 5.5 km long and can only be walked during the summer low-water period. The Metauro’s water level is therefore a specific seasonal requirement for this route. Nature observations focus on aquatic animals and plants, as well as riparian woodland and geologically interesting features. Accordingly, planning a day on this trail requires taking both the approximate distance and the necessary water level into account. Unlike the La Valorosa cycling tour, this trail is completed entirely on foot.

The Ponte di Calcinelli and the Roman way station Ad Octavo

The Via Flaminia led from Forum Sempronii eight miles to the mutatio “Ad octavo” in Calcinelli. The mutatio Ad Octavo was probably located in the village of Posta Vecchia in Calcinelli from Roman times onward. As a rest station, it served travelers and horses.

Mosaics in Saltara and Calcinelli’s former appearance

Three fragments of Roman mosaics found in Calcinelli are displayed in the sacristy of the former Chiesa del Gonfalone in Saltara. In the same former sacristy, the permanent Sala MOS exhibition opened in 2020. Among other things, it displays mosaics with hunting and animal scenes that probably formed part of the floor of a room in a Roman villa. Another historical testimony is the 19th-century Chapel of the Guardian Angel. It preserves part of Calcinelli’s appearance before 1960. The 19th-century chapel therefore preserves a different point in time from the probably Roman mosaics.
