If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Lazzaro, you will discover a place with an unusually wide range of opportunities for cultural and coastal days. Archaeological sites, historical finds, bathing waters and the seafront promenade give your trip different directions – from a focused museum visit to underwater exploration along rocky edges.
Archaeological layers in Lazzaro
The Museo Civico Archeologico Antiquarium Leucopetra displays archaeological finds documenting Greek, Roman and later settlements in the area of Motta San Giovanni. In the Area Archeologica Leucopetra, the visible remains of an imposing late Roman mausoleum with fragments of marble sarcophagi of Attic and Asian manufacture have been preserved.
The Area Archeologica Leucopetra also includes a late antique settlement, tableware, a roof tile inscribed with Greek-Byzantine characters, and a significant late imperial hoard. The site also contains a pseudo-circular kiln dating from the 5th century and a small necropolis with graves furnished with burial objects. Leucopetra therefore offers several historical layers that can be connected in your mind during a cultural stay in Lazzaro.
There is also concrete evidence of earlier settlement history outside Leucopetra: evidence of an early Christian necropolis was discovered at Capo dell'Armi near Lazzaro. More recent excavations near the San Vincenzo stream also uncovered part of a Roman villa with six rooms, three of which were decorated with Roman mosaics.
Orientation and accessibility
The Area Archeologica Leucopetra is located a few metres from the SS.106 road in Lazzaro. When planning your visit, it is important to note the different facilities in the two Leucopetra areas: The Area Archeologica has mobile walkways for people with disabilities, an information point, toilets, lighting, information panels in Braille and tourist signage. The Antiquarium Leucopetra is accessible via a staircase and has neither a ramp for people with disabilities nor a lift.
Water, Shore and Rocky Edges
The Lazzaro–Lido Sogno bathing water section is rated “Excellent” along a length of 1,707 metres. Lazzaro’s seafront promenade is also a starting point for deep underwater exploration along rocky edges that generally run more or less parallel to the beach in places. Anyone who prioritises water and coast when choosing a holiday apartment in Lazzaro will find a clear thematic focus for their trip here, without having to forgo historical discoveries.
Places to visit in the surrounding area
The surrounding area of Lazzaro is home to Castello di Santo Niceto, the ruins of Pentedattilo, Castello Aragonese, the Museo Diocesano and Spiaggia La Sorgente beach. The wider regional area also includes Lido Comunale Zerbi beach and Spiaggia di Archi beach. Capo d'Armi is located close to Lazzaro and adds a distinctive coastal attraction to the selection.
Depending on whether you want to focus on historical sites, bathing waters or rocky underwater landscapes, your holiday days can take on different emphases.
For further orientation in the area, you can also see Gerace, Martone, Condofuri, Condofuri Marina, Stilo, Bivongi, Bagnara Calabra and Varapodio.
