The Greek Language and a Unique Heritage

Condofuri combines the landscapes of Aspromonte with a Greek-influenced cultural heritage. One particularly distinctive part of the municipality is Gallicianò: the Greek-speaking village lies in the Amendolea Valley and is now part of the municipality of Condofuri. Its tangible and intangible heritage dates back to Magna Graecia and is passed down through symbols, language and music. This creates a destination where the landscape and regional identity can be experienced together at close range.

Gallicianò is located in the Greek-influenced area of Parco Nazionale dell’Aspromonte and overlooks the Fiumara Amendolea. The Fiumara is considered the largest fiumara on the southern side of Aspromonte. Its broad riverbed and the bends in the valley shape the landscape. Anyone choosing a holiday apartment in Condofuri can therefore plan a mix of cultural discoveries in Gallicianò and a stronger focus on the landscapes of the Amendolea Valley.

Churches, Museums and Music in Gallicianò

The Chiesa di San Giovanni stands in the main square, Platia Alimos, and is dedicated to the village’s patron saint. The Orthodox church Madonna di Grecia, also known as Panaghia tis Elladas, provides another cultural highlight. It contains Byzantine-inspired icons and ornaments characteristic of the Greek Orthodox tradition. The Grecofona Library is another place worth visiting in Gallicianò.

The Museo etnografico in Gallicianò is dedicated to Anzel Bogasàri-Merianoù. The Museo Archeologico “Vallata dell’Amendolea” offers an additional insight into finds from the municipality of Condofuri. These include Greek-Roman tombs, Capuchin tombs, and a channel for draining water. The museum is housed in the former primary school building in Amendolea and is located near the Castello dei Ruffo di Calabria. Visits take place by prior reservation.

The Casa della Musica, also known as Spiti ti Musikì, was conceived as a space for research, experimentation and the production of music and dance from Greek Calabria. Together with the churches, library and museums, it creates a multifaceted cultural focus in Gallicianò. Families and other travellers can connect different forms of history, language, architecture and music here without having to consider these subjects separately.

Amendolea: Between the Castle, Village Remains and Hiking Trail

Amendolea also leads to striking reminders of the past. Castello dell’Amendolea includes a tower chapel built during the Norman period, with a small church featuring an apse. Its entrance faces south in accordance with Byzantine tradition. The Castello also features a clearly recognisable entrance area and a rectangular Palacium Castri with high walls, round-arched windows and small towers. The remains of the ancient village of Amendolea lie below the castle.

Amendolea can be reached via a turn-off from the provincial road at the level of the “passerella sull’Amendolea”. For hiking enthusiasts, the third stage of the Sentiero dell’Inglese is also relevant: it leads from Amendolea via Gallicianò to Bova. The route of the stage and the Fiumara provide the stay with a scenic and active perspective, while the castle, village remains and museums form its historical focus.
