Brancaleone is located on the Ionian coast and combines the coastal landscape of Brancaleone-Marina with natural and cultural attractions spread throughout the town and its surrounding area.
Coast and nature around Brancaleone
The Spiaggia di Brancaleone beach is located in the immediate vicinity of Brancaleone-Marina. Spiaggia di Brancaleone is designated as area IT9350160. The beach comprises sandy dunes stabilized by vegetation resistant to salty winds. Brancaleone-Marina also has one of the longest seafront promenades along the entire coast. Nature enthusiasts will therefore find a designated area, sandy dunes, salt-resistant vegetation and a long promenade in the coastal region.
Other beaches are located around Brancaleone-Marina. Spiaggia dello Scoglio Cuzzufri is in the immediate vicinity of Brancaleone-Marina. Spiaggia di Torrevarata and Spiaggia di Bianco are also located in the surrounding area. For planning excursions by the sea, the three additional place names can be noted separately: Spiaggia dello Scoglio Cuzzufri, Spiaggia di Torrevarata and Spiaggia di Bianco.
Marine conservation and distinctive local features
The Centro Recupero Tartarughe Marine is located in Brancaleone-Marina in the former station ticket office. It is situated on the S.S. 106, Piazza Lorenzo e Gilla, formerly Piazza Stazione. For school groups traveling along the Ionian coast, arriving by train is recommended, as the train stops at the Centro Recupero Tartarughe Marine.
Jasmine, literature and local culture
The first jasmine plants were introduced in Brancaleone in 1927. Distilleries that processed jasmine and bergamot also continued to operate. During his exile, Cesare Pavese lived in Brancaleone from 1935 to 1936 in a house on Via Marina in Brancaleone-Marina.
The Chiesa Arcipretale dell’Annunziata contains remains of a valuable 16th-century polychrome marble altar. The Museo del Mare has three rooms with dioramas of marine animals. Several excursion opportunities are located in the hills of Torre Sperlongara. The hills of Torre Sperlongara thus provide a landscape contrast to the coastal area of Brancaleone. Culture enthusiasts can distinguish between the jasmine tradition, literary history, sacred art and the Museo del Mare in Brancaleone.
Historic destinations in the surrounding area
The archaeological site Parco archeologico urbano di Brancaleone Vetus is located in the immediate vicinity of Brancaleone-Marina. The Castello dei Carafa castle is located in the surrounding area of Brancaleone-Marina. The Castello di Palizzi Superiore castle and the Castello Normanno di Bova castle are also located in the surrounding area. Culture enthusiasts therefore also have Brancaleone Vetus and three castles in the surrounding area available as historic destinations.
