Dermbach brings together cultural history, a traditional small livestock market and trails through the Yew Garden. The museum brings local history to life; the adventure trail leads through the forest up to the Rhönpaulus Cave. As you plan your trip, you can then decide whether historic sights, the seasonal market or a hike should shape your stay.

Discover the Museum and Architectural History

The Museum of the Thuringian Rhön showcases traditional crafts such as weaving and carving, as well as historic tools, traditional costumes, furniture, agricultural equipment and handicrafts. The collection illustrates different aspects of everyday life in the past. Selected highlights in cultural and social history also include the history of the Dermbach administrative district, the Peasants’ War in the Vorder Rhön and cork processing in Dermbach.

Other topics reach beyond the town itself: the museum explores small industrial businesses along the Feldabahn, built in 1880, and the Feldabahn itself, a narrow-gauge railway also built in 1880. It also covers the legend of Rhönpaulus and the 1866 clashes between Prussia and Bavaria in the Dermbach area. The same museum thus brings together crafts, regional history and individual historic events.

The buildings also offer tangible points of interest for a historical walking tour. Dermbach Castle was built in 1707 by Adalbert von Schleifras, Prince-Abbot of Fulda. Three simple Baroque-style buildings enclose a spacious rectangular courtyard. The Protestant church on Kirchberg is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. It was built in 1714 on the foundations of an earlier church, in the style of Peasant Baroque.

Other notable places include the smallest half-timbered church in South Thuringia, dating from 1677, and the Old Cemetery, now a small park-like area. The Catholic parish office is housed in a former Franciscan monastery built in 1730/31. Together, these places show different forms of local architectural history, and they do not all date from the same period.

Keep the Pigeon Market Date in Mind

The traditional Pigeon Market is a small livestock market and is listed in the state register “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Thuringia.” It has been part of Dermbach’s traditions for over 100 years. The usual seasonal schedule is the last Saturday of each month from October to March. There was also a longer interruption: the market was scheduled to resume on 28 March 2026. If you want to plan your trip around the market, check the specific date.

Forest Trails and Nature Nearby

The Yew Garden, a yew forest, lies above Glattbach, a district of Dermbach. The Rhönpaulus Forest–Yew Garden adventure trail passes through a rare, primeval forest and leads up to the Rhönpaulus Cave. The trailhead is in Dermbach, at a car park near the bus station, right beside the B285 on the edge of town towards Kaltennordheim.

The one-way route is seven kilometres from Dermbach and two kilometres from Glattbach. The same path leads back downhill via the Neuberg. These two distances show how important your chosen starting point is when planning the route; both refer to the one-way journey. The forest, cave and different route lengths give the adventure trail a different focus from the historic sights in town.

The Bat Trail offers another way to explore nature, running from Neidhartshausen to Zella, a district of Dermbach. For decades, the attic of the church in Neidhartshausen has been home to a maternity roost of the greater mouse-eared bat. This protected roost was included in the European Natura 2000 network as a Site of Community Importance in 2008. The Bat Trail and the adventure trail offer different ways to experience nature: one runs between two districts, while the other leads to the forest and cave.
