Kaltenlengsfeld is first mentioned as Lengifeld in a Fulda charter from 819. A much later historical record has been preserved in the village church: the double galleries feature an extensive series of paintings from 1721 depicting scenes from the Old Testament. The charter and the paintings offer two different ways of exploring the history of the place—a written record from its early history and a religious visual program from the 18th century.
Events Throughout the Year
The traditional Rhönmassenskilauf takes place every January in Kaltenlengsfeld. The “Rhöner Abend im Advent” is also held annually, jointly by the municipality and the associations of Kaltenlengsfeld. The two events take place at different times of the year. Hiking and Accommodation in Kaltenlengsfeld
The Rhön Circular Trail Kaltenlengsfeld 2 follows the route of the Vorderrhönweg, a certified Extratour of the Hochrhöner. The route heads north through Hahnberg Forest. This gives the local hiking focus specific names and a clear direction. The “Rhönbrise” ski and hiking hut is a rustic-style restaurant and offers overnight accommodation. When looking for a holiday apartment, the hiking options may be just as important as the history and event dates; the hut is a separate, specifically named accommodation option.
Churches, Museum and Trails in Kaltennordheim
The wider destination of Kaltennordheim offers additional cultural and hiking attractions. The Kilianskirche in Kaltennordheim was built in the 14th century to replace a wooden church. In 1597, the Nikolaikirche was built as the city’s second and larger church. The two building histories mark different periods. The Amtshaus was built on the site of the former Merlinsburg from 1752 to 1754.
The local history museum is now housed in the Merlinsburg building. The museum’s castle area is currently being renovated and cannot be visited. The museum barn displays historic agricultural equipment and scenes from rural life, including baking, milk processing and food storage. A guided tour of the town called “Auf alten Spuren” (“Following Old Traces”) includes the Kilianskirche, the historic old town and the surviving town wall; it is available on request.
The “Heiratsmarkt” is another recurring event in Kaltennordheim: it takes place every year at Whitsun and was first held in 1563. During the 19th century, it developed into a folk festival in the Thuringian Rhön. The Whitsun season and the market’s long history give this event a different rhythm from the January and Advent events in Kaltenlengsfeld.
Two Circular Trails with Similar Names
Pay close attention to the route names when comparing the trails. The Rhön Circular Trail Kaltennordheim 1 is 11.0 kilometres long, takes about four hours and is rated easy to moderate; it starts, among other places, at Kaltennordheim Town Hall. The Rhön Circular Trail Kaltennordheim 2 starts at the town hall and initially follows the Felda through the town. Part of this route passes through the approximately 50-hectare Große Hardt Nature Reserve. By contrast, the Rhön Circular Trail Kaltenlengsfeld 2 is the trail that heads north through Hahnberg Forest. The place name in the route title therefore helps distinguish the different trails described here.
