Hiking between mountain and valley

The “Vorderrhön” Dorndorf hiking club and the municipal administration have established five circular hiking trails. They are located in the Werra and Felda valleys and the Krayenberg region. The hiking routes between mountain and valley, around and through the districts of Krayenberggemeinde, and possible connecting routes add up to 57 kilometres in total. The network links several parts of the municipality, although no single circular trail covers the entire distance.

For hiking and Nordic walking, there are paved hiking and forest trails, numerous rest areas with tables and benches, and viewpoints overlooking the municipality and the Werra and Felda valleys. You can plan both exercise and breaks into your trip. The viewpoints offer a different perspective from the trails themselves, directing your gaze across the valleys and the municipality. Before setting out on a particular route, check the latest route information, as trail conditions can change.

Storks in the Werra floodplain and a cycle path to Merkers

White storks have nested annually in the Werra floodplain near Merkers since 2011. This recurring natural attraction complements the hiking options, offering another reason to take in the landscape.

There is also a specific route to consider for a cycling trip: a new cycle path runs from Tiefenort below the Krayenberg through the Werra floodplain to Merkers. Alongside the five circular hiking trails, you can plan the cycle path as a separate tour option; check the latest route information before setting off.

Local history and a moated castle

Since 2007, the Dorndorf local history museum has been housed in the village’s former printing works. Its extensive collection explores the development of crafts and industry, as well as the lives of the people of Dorndorf. It also covers notable figures and artists. The building’s former purpose and the collection’s subject matter come together here: the museum links a place rooted in Dorndorf’s history with insights into the development of the village and its people.

The moated castle of Feldeck is located in the district of Dietlas, by the Felda. The site has been known since 1376 and passed into the possession of the Lords of Buttler as a moated castle in 1626. The former residential tower is part of the complex. Depressions in the park hint at the former moats. These traces and the historical records give the building more than a single historical connection: they link its long history with features that still form part of the site today.

In the surrounding area, Krayenburg ranks among the oldest stone castle complexes in the Werra Valley. Its castle site is now a protected archaeological and architectural monument in the municipality of Tiefenort. This location is distinct from Feldeck moated castle and the Dorndorf local history museum; it is another point of interest for anyone interested in castles and the history of the Werra Valley.

More culture and landscape highlights in Wartburgkreis

The wider travel destination of Wartburgkreis offers further points of interest. More than 830 years old, Creuzburg Castle is one of Germany’s larger Romanesque castle complexes, with a curtain wall measuring over 340 metres around and an enclosed area of 7,400 square metres. Altenstein Palace offers a different focus: its park has around 20 kilometres of paths, including a 4.3-kilometre circular walking route. The palace also houses a Brahms memorial site, with an exhibition of letters and printed works documenting the close ties between Johannes Brahms and Duke Georg II of Saxe-Meiningen.

Wartburgkreis also offers destinations with connections to castle, park and music history. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether your stay will focus mainly on local hiking and nature, or whether you also want to visit these wider cultural attractions. Then compare the locations of the available accommodation with the places you plan to visit.
