Gerstungen can be explored from two different perspectives: the Werra Valley Museum combines regional history with the everyday lives of former residents, while the family-friendly Werra-Suhl Valley Cycle Path includes Gerstungen as the destination of a route around 33 kilometres long. Nearby, the Border Trail and the distinctive church in Untersuhl add further historical touches. Culture, cycling and border history can each shape your stay in a different way.

Regional history at the Werra Valley Museum

The Werra Valley Museum is housed in the rooms of Gerstungen’s old administrative castle. Its permanent exhibition spans two floors and covers regional history and the everyday lives of former residents. Fossilized wood and petrified remains from the river floodplain are displayed alongside photos and information panels about the formation of the Werra landscape. The exhibition thus ranges from evidence of the river floodplain to aspects of life in the region in earlier times.

The archaeological objects include numerous Neolithic tools and finds from Iron Age settlements, including pottery, urns and jewellery. Craftsmanship is represented by guild chests, guild and craft books from the 17th century, as well as handcrafted products and tools. Reconstructed utility rooms, a barn, kitchen and parlour complement the collection with vivid depictions of everyday life in the past.

An extensive collection of Werra pottery showcases colourful rural ceramics made in the region. This distinct craft theme sits alongside the archaeological finds and insights into past ways of life.

Cycle path and border history

The family-friendly Werra-Suhl Valley Cycle Path runs for around 33 kilometres from Bad Salzungen to Gerstungen on the Thuringian-Hessian border. Nearby, the Border Trail offers a different scale: it is about 800 metres long, starts at the edge of Wildeck-Obersuhl in the direction of Gerstungen and ends at the border museum at the guard post. A longer cycling route and a shorter walk featuring border history thus offer different options for an outing.

The Border Trail is said to be freely accessible and open to visitors year-round; guided walks can be arranged. If you plan to visit the trail, check current access arrangements in advance.

Architecture and other cultural themes

In Untersuhl, a village connected with Gerstungen, stands a church with a circular ground plan and a solid, tower-like round structure. Its architecture differs from that of churches in the surrounding area. Alongside the Werra Valley Museum’s collection, it provides a distinct architectural theme nearby.

Further historical highlights can be found elsewhere in the Wartburg district. More than 830 years old, Creuzburg is one of Germany’s larger Romanesque castle complexes, with a perimeter of over 340 metres of curtain wall and an enclosed area of 7,400 square metres. Point Alpha is an authentic Cold War site; a permanent exhibition in the House on the Border tells the story of Germany’s division. Alongside Gerstungen’s history of everyday life and craftsmanship, the Wartburg district therefore offers castle architecture and the history of Germany’s division as distinct themes to explore.
