The Zella Orchard Meadow Nature Trail provides information about the 2,000-year history of fruit growing in the Rhön, traditional varieties, the care needed to maintain the trees and the health benefits of the fruit. The trail thus connects a specific landscape with knowledge about growing, preserving and using fruit. It is 300 metres long and leads directly across the meadow. It is therefore only very partially suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs—a key point when choosing an outing.
Provostry Garden and Baroque Hall
The provostry garden includes the historic Lourdes grotto, the “Immerse Yourself in the Life of an Orchard Meadow” adventure playground and the monastery garden; there is also a biosphere information centre at the provostry. The playground’s name picks up on the orchard-meadow theme, while the grotto and monastery garden add further accents. The provostry was completed in 1718. The first floor houses a Baroque hall restored in 2016. The ceiling fresco features mythological motifs of Bacchus and Ariadne at its centre. It was created by Johann Karl Emanuel Wohlhaupter (1683–1756), a court painter from Fulda. With its garden, grotto and hall, the provostry brings together links to nature with architectural and art history.
Church Architecture and Architectural Details
The Catholic Baroque Church of the Assumption of Mary in Zella was completed in 1732 and built from red sandstone to plans by Andrea Gallasini. Above the main portal is the coat of arms of its builder, von Dalberg, featuring six lilies and the Fulda Cross. The completion date, building material and coat of arms offer different points of entry for exploring the church. Together with the mythological ceiling fresco in the provostry, they reveal a Baroque focus that can be seen both in the building itself and in an artistic motif.
Dermbach as a Broader Travel Theme
