Klings combines a circular trail across a plateau with wood art along the way and a village church with its own architectural history. The Klings Rhön Circular Trail runs across a plateau on the premium hiking trail “DER HOCHRHÖNER.” Its starting point is the community center; the route is 7.9 km long. The distance gives you a concrete starting point for planning. If trail details change later, it is worth checking the local signage.

Hiking and Wood Art Along the Way

The Klings Rhön Circular Trail is part of the “Rhön Wood Art Routes.” Along the way, you will find sculptures on the themes of nature and hiking; the trail also passes Rhön dialect steles. This brings exercise, wood art and regional language together on the same route. One of the sculptures is “Wanderrast,” created by master wood sculptor Kerstin Genschow from Klings. If you enjoy combining several interests on an outing, you will find not only a hiking route here, but also artworks and linguistic insights as specific trail themes.

Village History and a Nearby Destination

Klings village church was rebuilt in the Neo-Romanesque style and reconsecrated in 1879. Its architectural history offers a different focus from the circular trail: here, the architecture of a single historic building takes center stage, while the trail combines a route, sculptures and dialect steles. When planning your holiday, you can weigh these different highlights against each other rather than planning your stay around just one activity.

Another point of interest lies near Klings: the roughly 800-year-old Hexenlinde stands on the border between Hesse and Thuringia, about 4 km from Klings. It is known from many legends. Its approximate age and location outside the village make it a different planning option from the village church and circular trail in Klings.

Kaltennordheim: More Cultural and Hiking Highlights

The wider destination of Kaltennordheim offers additional attractions and trails located there. St. Kilian’s Church was built in the 14th century to replace a wooden church. St. Nicholas Church was built in 1597 as the town’s second and larger church. The history and architecture of both buildings offer a different perspective from the village church in Klings, which was rebuilt in 1879.

The museum barn of the Kaltennordheim local history museum displays historic agricultural equipment and exhibits depicting rural everyday life. Topics include baking, milk processing and food storage. This broadens the cultural range beyond churches and architectural history to include former work and living practices. You can also include a guided town tour in your plans: “On Old Tracks” visits, among other places, St. Kilian’s Church, the historic old town and the preserved town wall. It is available on request.

A recurring cultural event in Kaltennordheim is the “Heiratsmarkt” (marriage market). It takes place every year at Pentecost; the exact date changes from year to year. The market was first held in 1563 and developed into a folk festival in the Thuringian Rhön during the 19th century. The Amtshaus (administrative building) was built on the site of the former Merlinsburg between 1752 and 1754. These historical milestones add further points of interest to a stay in Kaltennordheim that are clearly distinct from the attractions in Klings.

Two Circular Trails, Different Distances

The wider destination of Kaltennordheim also offers its own hiking options. The Kaltennordheim 1 Rhön Circular Trail is 11.0 km long, takes about four hours and is rated easy to moderate; it starts, among other places, at Kaltennordheim Town Hall. The Kaltennordheim 2 Rhön Circular Trail also starts at the town hall and initially follows the Felda through the town. Part of the route passes through the approximately 50-hectare Große Hardt nature reserve. By comparison, the Klings circular trail is 7.9 km long and starts at the community center. The distances help you compare different hiking plans without treating the trails as interchangeable.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider which themes are central to your trip: the circular trail and wood art in Klings, the history of the village church, or the cultural and hiking opportunities in the wider destination of Kaltennordheim. This way, your choice of holiday destination can reflect the experiences you want, without assuming any particular features of the accommodation.
