Kaltennordheim: Churches, Museum and Trails

Kaltennordheim offers different ways to explore history and nature: you can visit churches and the local history museum, learn about the marriage market or choose one of the Rhön circular trails. Churches, Museum and Town History

St Kilian’s Church was built in the 14th century to replace a wooden church. A second, larger church was added within the town in 1597: St Nicholas’ Church. Their construction histories highlight different periods and offer a starting point for exploring Kaltennordheim’s development.

The local history museum is now housed in the Merlinsburg building. The Amtshaus (administrative building) was built on the site of the former Merlinsburg from 1752 to 1754. In the museum’s barn, the local history museum displays historic agricultural equipment and scenes of rural life. These include baking, milk processing and food storage. Hiking Trails and Historic Traces

The Rhön Circular Trail Kaltennordheim 1 is 11.0 kilometres long and takes about four hours. It is rated easy to moderate and starts, among other places, at Kaltennordheim Town Hall. Its length, approximate duration and difficulty level can help you fit the hike into your day’s plans.

The Rhön Circular Trail Kaltennordheim 2 offers a different route description: it also starts at the town hall and initially follows the Felda through the town. Part of it passes through the approximately 50-hectare Große Hardt nature reserve. This route therefore combines a section through Kaltennordheim with nature in the protected area. The two circular trails differ in the route details described; choose according to whether length and estimated duration or the route through town and countryside matters most to you.

“On Old Tracks” also focuses on Kaltennordheim’s history. The guided town tour includes, among other places, St Kilian’s Church, the historic old town and the surviving town wall. Whitsun Tradition

The “Marriage Market” takes place at Whitsun. It was first held in 1563 and is still held every year. In the 19th century, it developed into a folk festival in the Thuringian Rhön. This tradition therefore combines a specific annual date with a long history. If you would like to plan your trip around a local festival, Whitsun is the time to visit; for those interested in culture, the market is also a distinct part of the town’s history.
