Half-timbered houses, town hall and Normannstein Castle

Noteworthy half-timbered houses can be found in Treffurt’s old town and in the historic centres of its districts. Treffurt Town Hall, with its tall tower, was built in the 16th century. Its half-timbering was revealed during extensive renovation work in 1990. St Boniface’s Church dates back to the 13th century and contains, among other things, a Gothic winged altarpiece.

At Normannstein Castle, the lords of Treffurt expanded the original keep and its ring wall into a prestigious complex. After the age of the knights, the Ganerben (co-heirs) resided at the castle until the 16th century and administered the town of Treffurt from there. Normannstein is therefore part of the town’s history. The chapel building and gatehouse acquired their present appearance after 1894. The castle has undergone extensive renovation and features the “Werraburgen über Werrafurten” exhibition, castle dining facilities and two wedding rooms in a historic setting. The exhibition and dining facilities are currently closed.

Local history museum: town history and activities for children

The Treffurt Local History Museum spans four floors and showcases crafts, geological finds, the Ganerbschaft (co-heirship) and the division of the town into three parts. Other exhibition highlights include traditional Werra ceramics, regional geology and local cigar-making. The Ganerbschaft features both in the castle’s history and in the museum; the town’s division into three parts adds to the historical perspective presented there.

For children, the museum offers a treasure hunt with Rosalie the museum mouse. Visitors can also experience what learning was like in the past at an old school desk. The local history museum can be visited by arrangement through the tourist information office, so please arrange your visit in advance.

Hiking trails and views around Treffurt

The Leine-Werra Nature Park Trail leaves Treffurt via the 362-metre-high Sülzenberg; from there, views over the Werra Valley open up at several points. At the “Lindenhecke” rest area on the Normannstein TOP Hiking Trail, enjoy a 360° panoramic view, while sun loungers invite you to linger. Further along the Normannstein TOP Hiking Trail, discover botanical highlights such as orchids, as well as works of art along the Ars Natura Trail.

Another hiking destination is the summit of Adolfsburg, described as a popular spot with wonderful views. The mountain is 378 metres high and consists of shell limestone. Each hiking destination offers a different experience: repeated views over the Werra Valley, panoramic vistas from the rest area, botanical highlights and art along the trail, or a summit with a view.

More cultural destinations in the Wartburg district

Beyond Treffurt’s town and castle history, the wider Wartburg district offers further examples of Romanesque castle architecture: the more than 830-year-old Creuzburg Castle, with a ring wall measuring over 340 metres in circumference and an enclosed area of 7,400 square metres, is one of Germany’s larger Romanesque castle complexes. At Gerstungen Palace, the Werra Valley Museum presents the region’s history in 22 exhibition rooms and brings traditional crafts to life. The Wartburg district’s cultural offerings thus range from castles to regional history and crafts.
