Bad Liebenstein combines a long spa park history with designed landscapes, theatre traditions and hiking opportunities. This makes the town appealing to travellers who want to divide their time between culture and outdoor activities. Places to discover include a historic spa park, the landscaped park of Altenstein Castle, a named circular route and independent cultural venues. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these aspects you would like to shape your stay most.

Spa Park History and Garden Landscapes

The Historic Spa Park in Bad Liebenstein was laid out in 1799. Together with the adjoining Burgberg hill, it covers almost 30 hectares. The spa park has a Kneipp facility and a barefoot path; three terrain trails offer opportunities for healthy exercise in nature. These features give the spa park a range of attractions, from its landscaped green spaces to its outdoor exercise trails.

Altenstein Castle, with its 160-hectare landscaped park, offers a different perspective on the parkland. Garden designers Hermann Fürst von Pückler-Muskau, Eduard Petzold and Peter Joseph Lenné all contributed to its design. Those interested in garden art and landscape design will find a tangible historical connection here. The castle park and the Historic Spa Park are two distinct points of interest for exploring Bad Liebenstein’s park history.

Theatre, Architectural History and Special Places

The Comödienhaus Bad Liebenstein is one of Thuringia’s oldest theatre buildings. It was built in spring or summer 1800 at the behest of Duke Georg I of Saxe-Meiningen. Since opening, it has represented theatre culture, with comedies, operettas, operas and other performances. The Wandelhalle adds to the town’s architectural character: it was built in 1913 in the classical style. Together, the two buildings reflect different strands of history—the theatre with its long performance tradition, and the Wandelhalle with its classical design.

The ruins of Bad Liebenstein Castle are also part of the town’s history. They stand on a hill 460 metres above sea level, overlooking the town. A hiking trail leads from the Kurhaus Bad Liebenstein to the Burgberg hill by the ruins in about 25 minutes. If you would like to combine a hike with a destination at higher elevation, this is one option to consider.

Circular Route, Cave and Wildlife Park

The Kultur-NaTour is a 11.0-kilometre, moderately difficult circular route. The ascent and descent are each listed as 225 metres; the duration is about 3 hours and 30 minutes. The start and finish are at the Bad Liebenstein Tourist Information Office. The route passes Altenstein Castle and descends to the Luisenthal Waterfall. Its length, elevation gain and approximate duration give you specific details to help fit the hike into your day’s plans.

The Altenstein Cave, Thuringia’s oldest show cave, is located in the municipality. Its features include a cave dome, an underground lake and a stream, as well as light and sound installations and a 3D model of the cave. It is also a habitat for several protected bat species. The Bad Liebenstein Wildlife Park offers a different focus: around 60 species and approximately 300 animals live across 5 hectares, and there is a playground for children.

One custom with a clearly defined date in the calendar takes place in Schweina: the Antoniusberg torch-burning event is held every year on 24 December and draws many visitors on Christmas Eve. If you are planning to visit then, you can include this fixed-date event in your plans.
