Windischleuba combines a signposted village walk with the cemetery, whose birch avenues are well worth a stroll in their own right. The walk’s stops lead to various local landmarks—from the Old Forge to the Duke Ernst Monument. Local history and walks are therefore central when considering which experiences matter to you in choosing a holiday apartment.

Discover Windischleuba on Foot

The Historic Village Walk in Windischleuba is signposted. Its stops include the Renaissance castle, the Old Forge, a former three-sided farmstead, St. Nicholas Church, the escort and customs house, the cemetery, the Zum Mönch inn, a four-sided farmstead, and the Duke Ernst Monument. The walk was created together with Windischleuba residents as part of “The Flying Salon – Cultural Exchange in the Altenburger Land.” The different stops offer a tangible glimpse of the local landmarks you can discover along the way.

The cemetery is one of the stops; its birch avenues are also a worthwhile destination for a walk. If you prefer to choose a single destination for a stroll, this offers a different focus from a walk that takes in several stops. Since 1977, Windischleuba Castle has housed a youth hostel with a musical focus. This historic use adds to the picture of the castle without replacing the walk or the local history.

Culture in the Altenburger Land

The wider travel destination of the Altenburger Land offers further cultural attractions. In Altenburg, the Residenzschloss stands on a porphyry rock and houses the Castle and Playing Card Museum. The Playing Card Museum is one of the oldest and most extensive museums of its kind in Europe. The Lindenau Museum offers a different collection focus: it owns 180 precious panels of early Italian painting from the 13th to the 16th century. The Mauritianum Natural History Museum displays a historic bird collection, fossils from lignite opencast mines, and an interactive area devoted to local flora and fauna. Since 2014, Brüderkirche has served as a pilgrimage and information centre for the Luther Trail and the old imperial road “Via Imperii.”

The Posterstein Castle Museum is also among the cultural attractions in the Altenburger Land and presents exhibitions on the region’s cultural history. Admission to the museum includes the castle dungeon and the climb up the 25-metre-high keep. Check the availability of these attractions before your trip.

Countryside, Routes, and Regional Experiences

The Altenburger Land is characterised by gently rolling hills, extensive forests, and idyllic bathing lakes. The Altenburg Botanical Adventure Garden offers a place to relax and unwind. Alongside cultural attractions, the wider travel destination therefore also offers countryside and recreation as themes in their own right.

For hiking enthusiasts, the modern Neuseen Challenge passes through the Altenburger Land; its route marker is a bright neon-yellow shoe. The Luther Trail also crosses the Altenburger Land and can be walked as a pilgrimage route. If you would like to include a cycling route in your plans, the Pleiße Cycle Route also passes through the Altenburger Land. The Kohlebahn is a traditional 900 mm narrow-gauge railway: its 15-kilometre route runs from the outskirts of Meuselwitz through the Schnaudertal valley.

The Schmecktouren in Altenburg offer another way to experience the region. They combine a city tour with regional food and stories about the people and traditions of the area. If you plan to join one, check the dates and booking conditions in advance.
