A Church History in Several Stages
In 1140, Göllnitz and its present-day districts belonged ecclesiastically to Altkirchen. A turning point came on 16 August 1553: in a major fire, the rectory and church tower burned down in Göllnitz, along with four farmsteads; the bells melted. Repairs to the church tower were completed in 1557. This year is carved into a stone above the entrance.
The dates that followed also show how the church changed. In 1735, a new gallery was built inside the church, and a new mortuary was erected beside it. In 1737, a clock was purchased for the church. In 1795, its interior was completely redesigned and it was altered with an external extension. Since this renovation, the church has essentially retained its present-day form. Taken together, the dates are more than a series of individual construction details: they make the long development of the local church building tangible.
A Musical Tradition with a Summer Connection
Singers from Altkirchen and Göllnitz have joined together to form a church choir. The choir mainly performs at festive church services, for example at the Harvest Festival. “Choral Singing in the Tent” is a separate summer event: it traditionally takes place once a year in Göllnitz.
