Outdoor pool, history and culture in Gößnitz

The Gößnitz outdoor pool has a 50-metre swimming pool, a sunbathing lawn, 3- and 5-metre diving platforms, a water slide, a playground and a volleyball court. This means you can swim and dive at the same place, as well as play, relax on the lawn or enjoy a ball game. For planning purposes, these facilities provide a specific local focus, while other travel interests can be guided by the town’s history and cultural offerings.

Gößnitz was first mentioned in a document on 17 August 1253. The Gößnitz Cultural Centre has a hall with around 100 seats for concerts and other events. Together with the outdoor pool, the Cultural Centre offers a different perspective on the town from that of its early documentary mention: one is a venue for events, the other a historical point of reference.

Railway station and regional connections

At 610 metres, the covered platform in Gößnitz is described as the longest in Germany. The railway station is being renovated, so this length may no longer reflect the current infrastructure. The route is another consideration when planning a trip: the Gößnitz–Crimmitschau section is part of the S-Bahn connection from Halle via Leipzig to Zwickau. The Red Spires are the surviving Romanesque towers of a former Augustinian canons’ monastery and are recognised as a cultural monument of national significance. Altenburg Residential Palace stands on a porphyry rock and houses the Palace and Playing Card Museum. The Playing Card Museum is one of the oldest and most extensive of its kind in Europe. Since 2014, the Brothers’ Church has housed a pilgrimage and information centre for the Luther Trail and the old imperial road Via Imperii.

The museums also offer different points of interest: the Lindenau Museum owns 180 precious panels of early Italian painting dating from the 13th to the 16th century. The Mauritianum Natural History Museum displays a historic bird collection, fossils from lignite mines and an interactive area about local flora and fauna. Posterstein Castle Museum focuses on exhibitions about the region’s cultural history. A visit also includes the castle dungeon and a climb up the 25-metre-high keep; check before travelling whether this offer is currently available.

Another way to get to know Altenburg is through the Schmecktouren (tasting tours), which combine a guided city tour with regional food and stories about the people and traditions of the region. Dates and booking conditions may change; check them before your trip. The Kohlebahn adds a railway theme to the Altenburger Land: it is a traditional 900 mm narrow-gauge railway with a 15-kilometre route from the outskirts of Meuselwitz through the Schnaudertal valley.
