Railways and technology at Kulturbahnhof

The Kohlebahner model railway features an authentic replica of the Altenburg–Meuselwitz railway line. Meuselwitz railway depot has also been recreated faithfully, at a scale of 1:87. The model exhibition also shows the reconstruction of the Meuselwitz–Altenburg railway line, including typical structures along the route. Moving models illustrate lignite extraction and processing.

The technical museum at Kulturbahnhof includes a large outdoor area, technical installations, mining exhibits, documents and historic trains. Groups of visitors can view the model railway from April to October by prior arrangement. If you are visiting as part of a group, making arrangements in advance is therefore part of the planning.

The coal railway itself offers another perspective on railway history: the 900 mm narrow-gauge railway runs along a 15-kilometre route between Meuselwitz and Regis-Breitingen. Stops are located in Wintersdorf and Haselbach; along the way, the railway crosses the state border between Thuringia and Saxony. According to the operator’s general information, trains run from Meuselwitz station almost every Sunday throughout the year. Half-timbered buildings and architectural history

The half-timbered ensemble at Neugasse 1/3 is a former weaver’s house dating from around 1700 and is among the oldest houses in Meuselwitz. The orangery in von-Seckendorff Park was built between 1724 and 1727. Both buildings offer insight into different aspects of the town’s history: one is a former weaver’s house, the other a building from the first quarter of the 18th century.

Hainberg Lake and the landscape

Hainberg Lake lies on the edge of town and is a place to relax and enjoy sporting activities. The landscape around Meuselwitz was once shaped by lignite mining and has since been reclaimed.
