Local History and Architectural Heritage

An exhibition on the history of Rositz is located on the upper floor of the Rositz local history room. The room also houses the Heimatstubenkino, a small attraction featuring historic projection equipment. This brings two distinct ways of experiencing the town together: the history of Rositz and the technology of cinema.

Access to the water tower is clearly restricted: it is not an observation tower and cannot be climbed or visited inside. Rositz’s sights also include a Protestant church and a Catholic church.

Bernsteinhof provides a specific date in the town’s history: its residential building was constructed in 1704 and is the oldest residential building in Rositz. Bernsteinhof is a listed building; the reasons include its well-preserved timber-boarded room. The building is notable both for its age and for a particularly distinctive architectural feature.

Changing Exhibitions at the Local History Barn

Special exhibitions that change each year are held at the Rositz local history barn, which is also decorated according to the season. The municipality combines changing exhibition topics with seasonal decorations. In 2007, the Rositz Local History Association presented the permanent exhibition “Everyday Life in Great-Grandmother’s Day”.

The Advent Festival and Spring Festival at Bernsteinhof also have a firm place in the town’s history: for several years, they have been highlighted as special events in the Rositz municipal calendar. A Park with a History of Its Own

Work on the “Trees of the Year” park began in 2010 on a large meadow on Goethestraße in Rositz. The first trees were planted in November of that year, including every “Tree of the Year”. The park’s development can therefore be linked to a specific location and two dates: when the landscaping began and when the first trees were planted. This story adds a different perspective on Rositz alongside its historic buildings.

Rositz and the Wider Altenburger Land Destination

The wider Altenburger Land destination is characterised by gentle hills, extensive forests and idyllically situated bathing lakes. There are regional attractions for active days, too: the Pleiße Cycle Path runs through the Altenburger Land. The Luther Trail also crosses the region and can be walked as a pilgrimage route. The Neuseen Challenge is a modern long-distance hiking trail through the Altenburger Land; its waymarker is a bright neon-yellow shoe. Cycling, hiking and pilgrimage are therefore available as distinct options.

Regional culture includes the Rote Spitzen, the surviving Romanesque towers of a former Augustinian collegiate monastery and a cultural monument of national importance. Altenburg Residential Palace stands on a porphyry rock and houses the Palace and Playing Cards Museum. The Playing Cards Museum is one of the oldest and most extensive museums of its kind in Europe. A visit to Posterstein Castle Museum includes access to the castle dungeon and the climb up its 25-metre-high keep; check availability before your trip.
