Herrenteich is a pond covering approximately 60 hectares, created by damming the Heilsau River. Reinfeld also has four smaller ponds and four Hellern ponds, which were historically used for carp farming.

Water and Trails

A four-kilometre circular trail runs around Reinfeld’s lower Herrenteich. A hiking route between Reinfeld and Reinbek has existed since 1988. The 39-kilometre cycling tour “Through the Hill Country and the Trave Lowlands” also begins in Reinfeld.

There is an open, generally unguarded bathing area at Herrenteich. Non-motorised boats and SUPs may be used on the body of water without a permit, subject to notification to the city. A canoe launch site is located at the confluence of the Heilsau/Mühlenau and the Trave.

Culture and History

The Matthias Claudius Church is a rendered brick building dating from 1636. The local history museum displays paintings by Reinfeld artists from the past 100 years. It also includes a collection on Matthias Claudius’s work and provides information about the former Reinfeld monastery and palace.

The Mill Museum at Claudiushof can be visited by appointment. The parsonage, built on the walls of Matthias Claudius’s birthplace, is described in Reinfeld as a sight worth seeing. Local Traditions

The carp season in Reinfeld begins with the Carp Festival and the draining of Herrenteich. Tench, eels, pike and trout are marketed in Reinfeld.
