Landscape and Location
Neustadt in Saxony lies between Dresden, Saxon Switzerland National Park and the Upper Lusatian Mountains. The Neustadt Valley lies at an elevation of 300–585 metres above sea level and is bordered by the Hohwald and Ungerberg ridges. Neustadt was first documented in 1333 as a gold-mining town founded by miners from Freiberg.
History and Townscape
The historic market area includes a 300-year-old town hall. A post mile column dating from 1729 stands near Neustadt’s historic town hall. A bronze fountain in the market area commemorates the cattle markets held there for centuries. The Protestant St. Jacobi Church preserves a completely intact late Gothic choir from the 15th century. The historic vicarage near St. Jacobi is Neustadt’s oldest building and was the workplace of pastor and local historian Wilhelm Leberecht Götzinger.
The centrally located Arthur Richter Park offers a walk among rare trees, with a pond, a fountain and waterfowl. The former Hofmühle Langburkersdorf watermill is open to the public as a historic building. Langburkersdorf Castle contains restored painted ceiling elements from the 17th century, which visitors can admire, and has an event room for events, concerts and cultural highlights. In the Polenz district, the former servants’ quarters are used for events.
A guided tour of the town centre introduces visitors to Neustadt’s history, anecdotes and local stories. A free town tour lasts around 1.5 hours and begins in front of the town hall at Markt 1.
Nature and Activities
In the Polenz district, blooming spring snowflake meadows are a notable seasonal feature. Valley hikes there are particularly appealing in spring. Local hiking and cycling trails lead directly to Neustadt’s outdoor swimming lake and the Polenz forest pool; car parking is available nearby. Neustadt in Saxony has more than 160 kilometres of developed and signposted cycling paths.
