Culture

The Schöne Höhe Belvedere was built from 1831 to 1833 as the first Goethe memorial. Gottfried Semper designed the ceiling painting for the fresco hall of the Belvedere, whose frescoes are based on Goethe’s ballads. Since the completion of the fresco restoration in 2000, the tower hall has served as a venue for cultural events and as a wedding ceremony room. A viewing platform offers wide-ranging views across the surrounding region.

A historic circular trail also uses digital support and leads visitors through Quandt’s Lieblingstal valley to the frescoes in the Belvedere’s tower hall. The Gottfried Semper Trail runs through Lieblingstal valley and past the Hubertus Chapel. The trail includes a cycling and hiking path on a former railway embankment with wide-ranging views. The Dittersbach Church also houses a Silbermann organ dating from 1726.

Landscape

The Devil’s Pulpit is a large rock in the Wesenitz River, equipped with benches as a rest area. The surrounding area has an extensive, well-developed network for hiking, cycling and horseback riding.

Cuisine

The Porschendorf Mill is a farm shop and manufactory for edible oils made from regional ingredients. In the farm shop, visitors can taste the oils and obtain information about ingredients and recipes. Visitors can tour the mill and see original machines and equipment; guided mill tours are available by arrangement. Traditional mill meals, as well as freshly baked bread and cakes, are also offered.

The Porschendorf Mill was first documented in 1547 as a gristmill and sawmill. Bus route 236 serves the mill at the Porschendorf Erbgericht stop.
