Discover Kirnitzschtal: Nature, Mills and Trails
Accommodation in Kirnitzschtal
The Kirnitzschtal Valley combines impressive nature with an unusually rich history revolving around water, mills and trails. The Kirnitzschtalbahn plays a special role: it has been in operation since 1898, takes hikers, tourists and spa guests to their destinations, and is Germany’s only tram that enters a national park. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in the Kirnitzschtal Valley, you can therefore base your choice on whether hiking, historical discoveries, observing nature or excursions without your own car are the main focus of your trip.
Along Historic Trails
The Flößersteig follows the traces of historic log rafting for around 13 kilometres. It leads from the mouth of the Kirnitzsch to Neumannmühle through the Kirnitzschtal Valley and is accompanied by numerous information boards. Parts of the trail can be incorporated into circular hikes in the national park. At the same time, you should take the conditions seriously: the Flößersteig is suitable for experienced hikers, as it is sometimes very narrow, exposed and difficult to walk. When planning your day, the approximate distance is just as important as your experience on more demanding trails.
The Sebnitz–Kirnitzschtal cycle route offers a different perspective. It leads from Sebnitz into the Kirnitzschtal Valley and back again. This means that different forms of transport are available for trip planning: a historic tram, a longer hiking trail and a cycling loop. The Kirnitzschtalbahn itself is not only a means of transport but also a characteristic feature of the valley.
Mills and Traces of the Past
Neumannmühle is the only mill in the Kirnitzschtal Valley that has largely preserved its original form. The older section was a board mill with a single-blade saw frame, has remained almost unchanged since its foundation and is at least 450 years old. One illustrative detail is the breastshot water wheel with a diameter of 4.80 metres. Those interested in crafts, technology and regional history will find a tangible way here to explore the development of the valley.
Buschmühle also tells of the former use of water power. Its grain mill and sawmill have been unused since 1992 but are still intact; Buschmühle was first mentioned in documents in 1592. Felsenmühle has been a popular refreshment stop in the Kirnitzschtal Valley for more than 100 years. Together with the historic mills, this creates an excursion programme that combines experiences in nature with tangible traces of work in the valley.
Rocks, Water and Special Excursion Destinations
In the upper part of the Kirnitzschtal Valley, near Hinterhermsdorf, lies the Kirnitzsch Gorge with the Upper Lock. The “Upper Lock” punt trip can only be reached on foot in the immediate surrounding area. Another striking feature is the Kuhstall on the Neuer Wildenstein: the natural sandstone arch is approximately 11 metres high, 17 metres wide and 24 metres deep. The so-called Heaven’s Ladder leads through a rock crevice to a small viewing platform overlooking the Bärenfang cliffs and the surrounding rocky landscape. Metal steps lead to this viewpoint; alternatively, there is a more comfortable route to the plateau, where an inn has stood since 1842.
Lichtenhain Waterfall is one of the most traditional excursion destinations in Saxon Switzerland. Since the 19th century, this historic water spectacle has attracted hikers, nature lovers and those seeking relaxation. Historically, when the water level in the reservoir was sufficient, the weir was opened, causing Lichtenhain Brook to begin roaring loudly for a short time. The waterfall can be reached by bus route 241 and the Kirnitzschtalbahn; it is approximately a 3-minute walk from the stop.
Observing Nature and Planning Your Journey
With a little patience and luck, you can observe white-throated dippers in the Kirnitzschtal Valley. It is the only songbird that can dive in flowing waters. This allows a stay with different interests to be varied: a historic site or a tram ride can be followed by a hike, a cycling loop or a quiet moment by a body of water. The Kirnitzschtal Festival takes place annually in the Kirnitzschtal Valley and complements the nature and cultural themes with a recurring event.
There are only a few parking spaces available in the Kirnitzschtal Valley. Travelling to and from the area by bus and/or the Kirnitzschtalbahn is recommended. This aspect may play an important role when looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home: consider which experiences you would like to combine and how you want to reach the respective starting points before deciding on accommodation.
