Hohenstein-Ernstthal: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In the Southwest Saxony region around Hohenstein-Ernstthal and Oberlungwitz, mining, textile, automotive and motorsport traditions come together. The first motorcycle race in this region took place on 26 May 1927.

Culture

St. Christophori is a Baroque church built in 1756/57 from an older structure; its west tower was rebuilt in 1731. Inside are an organ prospectus from the mid-18th century and a marble baptismal font created by Michael Hegewald in 1610.

The Karl May House is Karl May's birthplace and a museum. Regular lectures and special exhibitions complement the permanent exhibition. The Karl May House also offers guided city tours to selected sites associated with Karl May in Hohenstein-Ernstthal.

The Textile and Motorsport Museum features a historical demonstration workshop with functional Jacquard looms, collections of woven pictures and tapestries, as well as an exhibition on the history of the Sachsenring. Visitors can see on working machines how stockings are made and how knitting works.

The Sachsenring section includes original road-racing machines, racing clothing and an extensive model collection. The new Sachsenring racetrack covers 40 hectares; its ideal racing line is approximately 3,704 metres long and runs through 14 curves.

History

The Karl May Cave is a former mine adit dating from 1620. It is classified both as a monument to mining history and as a site associated with Karl May, and can be reached from the Karl May House via the Karl May hiking trail.

Nature

The 480-metre-high Pfaffenberg offers panoramic views across the Ore Mountains; on a clear day, the Fichtelberg can be seen on the horizon.

The Pfaffenberg local recreation area lies within the Rabensteiner Wald / Pfaffenberg landscape protection area. It includes a protected park and a dendrological educational trail.

Trails

The Karl May hiking trail runs through Hohenstein-Ernstthal and connects historic sites associated with Karl May with scenic sections and information boards. The route is moderately difficult, 11.5 km long and takes approximately 3.5 hours; it involves 219 m of ascent and 221 m of descent.
