Culture and History
St. Christophorus in Böhlen probably dates from the 12th century, was first mentioned in 1540, and is the oldest building in the town. The foundations of the nave, tower, and altar table are Romanesque. The church organ was built in 1794 by the Donati brothers from Altenburg. St. Christophorus is also associated with late Gothic figures of apostles and saints from the former village church in Zeschwitz.
In the Großdeuben district, visitors can see the Baroque Großdeuben manor house with its landscaped park, the Church of St. Catherine dating from 1716, and numerous restored Gründerzeit and Art Nouveau villas along the main street. The Church of Christ the King in Böhlen is associated with 70,000 bricks acquired from the demolition of the Geschwitz district near Rötha.
The Böhlen Cultural Centre began cultural operations in February 1952. Its theatre hall had 985 seats. At the time, the Cultural Centre was described as the largest cultural building in the former Leipzig district.
Nature
Böhlen's Gaulis district preserves parts of the Pleiße floodplain landscape. Rare bird species and native small game can be observed in Gaulis. The Pleiße floodplain area can be explored via an extensive network of paved walking paths.
Getting Around
Großdeuben is connected to Böhlen by a tourist cycling and hiking trail along the S 72. The Pleiße Cycle Route runs through the Leipzig New Lakeland and offers a detour to the Rötha Reservoir.
Böhlen is served by the S-Bahn lines S5, S5X, and S6 and can be explored by S-Bahn, bus, car, or via developed cycle paths. The airfield of the Böhlen Flying Club is located directly on the B 2 between Böhlen/Großdeuben and Zwenkau.
Leisure
The Böhlen Flying Club offers sightseeing flights over Leipzig and the Leipzig New Lakeland. The club also has a flight school for people who want to become pilots.
Böhlen Outdoor Pool has stainless-steel swimming and non-swimming pools, a separate paddling pool, water play features, a 68-metre-long slide, step-free access to the water, and sports facilities with beach volleyball and a small-sided pitch.
